The M48 Patton medium tank has been around for quite a long time and various versions have
been produced since the first ones rolled off the assembly lines in 1953. The first versions were
the M48, M48A1 and M48A2, equipped with a 90mm gun and a petrol engine. The first major
improvement appeared with the M48A3, still armed with a 90mm gun but fitted with a diesel
engine, which drastically extended the range of the vehicle. The M48A3 was used extensively in
combat by the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam war. The next upgrade came with the M48A5,
armed with a 105mm gun (the M48A4 code name is only used by the Americans to designate the
Israeli modified M48s which were the first to adopt a 105mm gun). Like the Israelis, some
countries using the M48 made their own modifications: the German M48A2GA2 and the South
Korean M48A5K (with its distinctive armoured side-skirts) are but two examples. Some countries
also developed specialised versions based on this tank, like the ARVs and engineer vehicles built by
Germany and Spain on M48 chassis, but these never went past the prototype stage. There was
also a flame-thrower version, the M67 (used in the Vietnam war) and an ill-fated anti-aircraft tank,
the M247 Sergeant York. Although they do use many M48 components, the M88 and M88A1 tank
recovery vehicles are more distant cousins than direct relatives of the M48.
Other M48 Patton Kits

The vehicle is well represented in kit form. I will only write here about 1/35th scale kits but other
kits exist in 1/72nd scale. Monogram made an M48A2 kit in the sixties which has recently be
released (for nostalgia's sake). Tamiya put out an M48A3 in the late seventies. This kit was judged
excellent in its time but it has some problems, mainly in the turret area, and doesn't compare well
with today's releases. Tamiya also produces an M247. Academy used to market the same M48A3,
presumably under licence from Tamiya. Seminar, a South Korean manufacturer also produces a
direct copy, of poor quality, of the Tamiya M48A3. Azimut Productions of France sell the Seminar
kit under their own label, Ironside. They make an M48A3 (just adding AFV-Club workable tracklinks
and a small photo-etched brass fret) and an M67 (same add-ons as the M48A3 plus resin parts).
Ironside also made a very nice M48A3 with dozer blade but this kit stayed at the prototype stage
and despite making a brief appearance in the Azimut catalogue it is unfortunately yet to be
produced. AFV Club makes an M48H (which is strictly speaking not an M48 : it is a Taiwanese built
tank using a M60 hull and a M48A5 turret): this kit contains Academy parts from their M60 and
M48 kits plus a few original AFV Club parts, AFV Club workable tracks and wheels from AFV Club's
M88 kits. The most recently tooled kit of a true M48, Academy Minicraft M48A5, enables you to
build the US version of the M48A5 as well as two Korean versions (early and late) almost straight
from the box (the US version requires some basic modifications, clearly highlighted in the
instructions). I chose to build the late Korean version which is illustrated on the kit box.
Building the Academy Kit

The first thing I did upon opening the kit box was to compare the sprues with those of a Tamiya
M48A3 : everything is different, nothing is carried over from the Tamiya kit! As with all the latest
Academy releases this kit is crisply moulded with lots of detail, the machine guns are extremely
delicate and realistic. The tracks are the best one-piece flexible vinyl tracks I've ever seen, very
detailed. Separate rubber tyres are provided : they speed off painting and give a perfect finish.
There's a realistic cast armour texture on the hull and turret This texturing is carried over to the
engine deck, which seemed strange at first but after checking my references, it appears to be so
on the real tank albeit not as rough as in the kit. I just toned the texturing down slightly with very
fine sandpaper in this area. I ran into some minor problems while assembling the suspension : on
each side the first road wheel station ends up slightly higher than the next six road wheels, if
assembled as per instructions (stage 2). This is probably because the shock absorber is too short
and I would advise modifying the first road wheel station accordingly. Unfortunately I noticed the
problem once the glue had set and had to resort to gently bend the suspension part and re-glue
the top of the shock absorber slightly lower on the hull. Strangely the three suspension arms E35
are not strictly identical (same problem with the three E36). I glued them in no particular order
and they fitted fine, but you can do dry runs, trying different combinations to stay on the safe
side... In stage 3, make sure to fill-in half a dozen ejection pin marks on part B15. This is tricky to
do without damaging adjacent detail, so take your time. In stage 6, don't glue the side skirts yet as
this would complicate things at the painting stage.

In stage 8, the turret builds beautifully, the fit between the lower and upper parts is excellent (the
best I've seen in any kit so far). There are however a couple of inaccuracies. First, contrary to the
instructions part B39 (machine gun deflector frame) should only be used for the Korean early
version, if you build one of the two other versions don't use this part and don't make the holes
marked 1 on the diagram. Second, the outer edge on the vertical sides of the gun mantlet dust
cover look suspect, although they might be accurate for some vehicles : I've never seen this
stepped pattern before, even the box art doesn't show them. In doubt, I decided to carve the
stepped pattern away, restore the turret surface in the areas involved and replicate the attaching
strips using plastic strip and sliced stretched sprue for the tiny rivets. You just have to copy the
pattern of the upper dust cover attaching strips, as depicted in the kit. In stage nine, the "Urdan"
type cupola needs some detailing (apart from the photo in Jane's Armour and Artillery, there is an
excellent close up of this type of cupola in M48 in Action) : put two small pieces of plastic rod on
the left and right front, a moon crescent shaped piece on top of the hatch, cut and move slightly
forwards the machine gun attachment moulded on part B3. At stage 11, it is almost impossible to
fix the towing cable (E1) as supplied, I broke mine three times but managed to repair it and put it
in place. I would advise cutting the ends and substituting nylon thread for the cables, with strips of
foil to replicate the attachment clips. Use fine solder wire for the smoke dischargers cables, rather
than the stretched sprue recommended in the instructions. I used telephone wire inside the
rubber tube provided for the searchlight to give it the desired shape. I also added a glass to the
searchlight using a piece of transparent plastic (not provided in the kit). The searchlight support is
a very complex and delicate assembly on the real tank and is simplified in the kit, however it would
be difficult to do better in this scale, even with photo-etched parts. It is difficult to locate precisely
the boxes fixed on the turret of both Korean versions, I managed to fit them with trial and error
and a very handy 1/30th scale plan of the Korean M48A5 early version published in an old issue of
the Japanese periodical The Tank Magazine (12/1979). I finally detailed the front mudguards with
plasticard, plastic strip and rivets made with Historex Agents punch and die set, again using the
box art as reference.

I masked the places where the hull and the side skirts were going to be glued together, and
proceeded to paint the whole tank green except some road wheels which I painted dark earth. I
then fitted the rubber tyres on the road wheels and weathered the lower hull and road wheels.
The armoured skirts were then cemented to the hull and the tracks and road wheels added. I
masked the tracks and road wheels using paper and masking tape, touched up the skirts and hull
with green and airbrushed the camouflage pattern of dark earth, buff and black. The areas that
were going to receive decals were covered with Johnson Klear acrylic floor polish applied with a
brush. When dry, decals were applied using Microscale Solvaset. The final weathering was then
done by airbrushing several coats of a very diluted mixture of grey, buff and flat base (I use Tamiya
acrylics) and one coat of Microscale flat varnish. Steel wire antennas were then added and painted
Humbrol Metalcote polished steel. This model took approximately 30 hours to build, about
average for such a large 1/35th scale kit considering the scratchbuilt improvements and
modifications.

In conclusion, this is a highly recommended kit for those who like modern armour and probably
the best all-around Patton kit along with another Academy kit, the Israeli M60A1 Blazer and the
hard to find Esci kits (also marketed by AMT/Ertl). For those wanting an accurate M48A3 or M247
it is worth considering kit-bashing the Minicraft Academy M48A5 kit with the respective Tamiya
offerings to get superior results.

Construction notes for M48A5K from Academy, may be built as Korean or US version of the
M48A5 by Lance Mertz:

If you have built any Patton tanks this kit should hold no real surprises for you. The only question
you have is which version to build. I chose the Korean version, as it allowed for more interesting
changes.
The M48A5 is pretty much an M48 with a 105MM gun, except for a few turret details. The Korean
version adds a few twists to this.

The chassis is a standard M48 chassis and goes together just fine. The only change are the side
skirts, which the Koreans have added to increase protection from anti-tank missiles and HEAT
rounds. They definitely make the tank distinctive. They go on easily and fit perfectly. I replaced
the headlights with a set of Greif M60 lights and they look great. This was my first use of Testors
Clear Part cement and I was impressed with it.

I used an aluminum barrel for the gun, which definitely is a plus, though the one that comes with
the kit looks fine. I also used an Minimica Antenna. The construction was straight forward until I
got to the wiring for the smoke grenade launchers. You need to provide your own wire for this
and I have a spool of think black wire. The kit come with brackets to hold the wire down. These
wire run from a fitting on the top of the turret to the smoke grenade launchers. It is not difficult
to accomplish. The cable for the searchlight comes with the kit and is very nice. I have enough left
for at least one more tank.

Painting was done in three stages, including some repainting. I primed the tank with Testors Gray
Primer, which gives you a nice starting point. Then I used some light green and tan spray only
Testors paints I have, airbrushing a random pattern on. My blacks simply refused to spray
properly, making a mess! I over painted much of the black and brush-painted on Choas-Black,
which is a nice, dark color. This was too dark and the green too green, so covered the entire tank
with an Umber wash, which toned down both, giving is a slightly weathered look. I also did the
same with the tracks, which I used from the kit.

The machine guns that come with the kit are nice, as are most of the smaller parts.
The kit comes with a couple of figures, but I had purchased the Academy Korean Tank crew, so I
assembled and painted the figures according to the box art. They are well molded and come with
lots of nice weapons and accessories. I put some ammo boxes and other stuff in the bustle rack,
too.

The decals were very limited, but the ones provided worked fine.

Overall this was a very nice kit to build and I recommend it to anyone tired of the standard fare.

El tanque medio M48 Patton ha estado alrededor por un tiempo bastante largo y varias versiones
se han producido desde los primeros que salieron de las cadenas de montaje en 1953. Las

de M60 y M48A5 torreta ) : este kit contiene Academia partes de sus kits de M60 y M48 adems
de algunas piezas originales AFV Club, AFV pistas viables club y ruedas de M88 kits de AFV Club. El
kit ms recientemente labrado de una verdadera M48 , Academia Minicraft M48A5 , le permite
construir la versin de EE.UU. de la M48A5 , as como dos versiones coreanas ( temprana y tarda)
casi en lnea recta desde el cuadro ( la versin de EE.UU. requiere algunas modificaciones bsicas ,

La construccin de la Academia Kit

La primera cosa que hice al abrir la caja del kit fue comparar los bebederos con los de un Tamiya
M48A3 : todo es diferente , nada se transfiere desde el kit de Tamiya ! Al igual que con todas las
ltimas versiones de la Academia este kit es quebradizo moldeado con un montn de detalles , las
ametralladoras son muy delicadas y realistas. Las pistas son las mejores pistas de una sola pieza de
vinilo flexibles que he visto , muy detallada . Neumticos de goma separadas estn disponibles:
aceleran fuera pintura y dan un acabado perfecto. Hay un elenco realista armadura textura en el
casco y la torreta Esta textura se traslada a la cubierta del motor , lo que me pareci extrao al
principio, pero despus de comprobar mis referencias , parece ser as en el tanque de verdad
aunque no sea tan difcil como en el kit. Acabo de entonado el texturizado ligeramente con papel
de lija muy fino en esta rea. Me encontr con algunos problemas menores , mientras que el
montaje de la suspensin: a cada lado de la primera estacin de rueda de carretera termina
ligeramente ms alto que los prximos seis ruedas , si se arman segn las instrucciones ( etapa 2 ) .
Esto es probablemente porque el amortiguador es demasiado corto y le aconsejo modificar la
primera estacin de rueda de carretera en consecuencia. Por desgracia, me di cuenta de que el
problema una vez que el pegamento se haba puesto y tuvo que recurrir a la doble suavemente la
pieza de la suspensin y volver a pegar la parte superior del amortiguador ligeramente inferior en
el casco. Curiosamente los tres brazos de suspensin E35 no son estrictamente idnticos ( mismo
problema con los tres E36 ) . Me las pegu en ningn orden en particular y que encajaba muy bien,
pero que puedo hacer pruebas en seco , intentando mltiples combinaciones para mantenerse en
el lado seguro ... En el estadio 3 , asegrese de llenar - en media docena de marcas de eyeccin
pines en parte B15 . Esto es difcil de hacer sin detalles adyacente perjudicial, as que tmate tu
tiempo. En la etapa 6 , no pegar los faldones laterales sin embargo, como esto complicara las
cosas en la etapa de pintura.

En la etapa 8 , la torre se construye muy bien , el ajuste entre las partes inferior y superior es
excelente ( el mejor que he visto en cualquier juego hasta el momento) . Sin embargo, hay un par
de imprecisiones . En primer lugar , en contra de las instrucciones de parte B39 (mquina de
bastidor deflector arma ) slo se debe utilizar para la primera versin coreana, si se construye una
de las otras dos versiones no usan esta parte y no hacen los agujeros marcados 1 en el
diagrama . En segundo lugar, el borde exterior de los lados verticales de la pistola mantlet cubierta
de polvo aspecto sospechoso, aunque pueden ser precisas para algunos vehculos : Nunca he visto
a este entr patrn antes , incluso el arte de la caja no los muestra . En caso de duda , me
decid a tallar el patrn escalonado de distancia, restaurar la superficie de la torreta en las reas
involucradas y replicar las tiras que sujetan con cinta de plstico y en rodajas plstico estirado para
los pequeos remaches. Slo tienes que copiar el modelo de las tiras que sujetan la cubierta
superior del polvo, como se muestra en el kit. En la novena etapa , el " Urdan " tipo cpula
necesita un poco de detalle (aparte de la foto de la armadura y la artillera de Jane, hay un
excelente primer plano de este tipo de cpula en la M48 en Accin ) : poner dos pequeos trozos
de varilla de plstico en el frontales izquierdo y derecho , una pieza en forma de media luna luna
en la parte superior de la escotilla , cortar y mover ligeramente hacia delante la unin
ametralladora moldeado por parte B3. En la etapa 11 , es casi imposible fijar el cable de remolque
( E1) en forma de suministro , romp la ma tres veces pero me las arregl para repararla y ponerla
en su lugar. Yo aconsejara a cortar los extremos y la sustitucin de hilo de nylon para los cables ,
con tiras de papel para reproducir los clips de sujecin . Utilice alambre de soldadura bien para los
cables descargadores de humo , en lugar del plstico estirado recomendado en las instrucciones .
Sola cable de telfono en el interior del tubo de goma provisto para el reflector para darle la
forma deseada. Tambin he aadido un vaso al reflector con un trozo de plstico transparente (no
incluido en el kit) . El soporte reflector es un conjunto muy complejo y delicado en el tanque de
verdad y se simplifica en el kit , sin embargo , sera difcil hacerlo mejor en esta escala, incluso con
partes de fotograbado . Es difcil localizar con precisin las cajas fijadas en la torreta de ambas
versiones coreanas , me las arregl para que encajen con ensayo y error y un plano a escala 1/30o
muy prctico de la de Corea M48A5 primera versin publicada en un viejo nmero de la revista
japonesa La revista Tank (12/ 1979) . Finalmente detall los guardabarros delanteros con
plasticard , tira de plstico y remaches hice con Historex Agentes punzn y la matriz conjunto ,
utilizando de nuevo el arte de la caja como referencia.

Enmascar los lugares en el casco y los faldones laterales iban a pegar juntos, y proced a pintar
todo el verde del tanque , salvo algunas ruedas que pint tierra oscura . Entonces me coloqu los
neumticos de goma en las ruedas y degradado el casco inferior y ruedas . Los faldones blindados
fueron pegadas al casco y las vas y las ruedas de carretera aadido . Enmascar las vas y las
ruedas de carretera con papel y cinta adhesiva, conmovido hasta las faldas y casco con verde y
aergrafo del patrn de camuflaje de tierra oscura , piel de ante y negro . Las reas que se van a
recibir las calcomanas estaban cubiertas de Johnson Klear cera para pisos acrlica aplicada con un
pincel. Una vez seco, calcomanas se aplicaron usando Solvaset microescala . La final de la
intemperie y luego fue hecho por aerografa varias capas de una mezcla muy diluida de color gris ,
base de piel de ante y plano (utilizo Tamiya acrlicos ) y una capa de barniz plana microescala .
Despus se aadieron las antenas de alambre de acero y pintadas Humbrol Metalcote inoxidable
pulido. Este modelo tom aproximadamente 30 horas para construir, lo normal para un equipo
grande escala 1/35th considerando las mejoras y modificaciones scratch .

En conclusin , este es un kit muy recomendable para aquellos que gustan de la armadura
moderna y probablemente el mejor de todos -en torno kit Patton junto con otro kit de la
Academia, el israel M60A1 Blazer y difciles de encontrar kits Esci (tambin comercializado por
AMT / Ertl ) . Para aquellos que quieran una precisa M48A3 o M247 vale la pena considerar kit-
golpeando la Academia kit Minicraft M48A5 con las respectivas ofertas Tamiya para obtener
resultados superiores.

Notas de construccin para M48A5K de la Academia , se pueden construir como coreano o versin
de EE.UU. de la M48A5 por Lance Mertz :

Si ha creado ningn tanques Patton este kit debe contener ninguna sorpresa real para ti. La nica
duda que tiene es la versin que desea construir. Eleg la versin coreana, ya que permita cambios
ms interesantes .
El M48A5 es ms o menos un M48 con una pistola 105MM , a excepcin de algunos detalles
torreta . La versin coreana aade algunos giros a esto.

El chasis es un chasis estndar M48 y va de la mano perfectamente. El nico cambio son los
faldones laterales , que los coreanos han aadido para aumentar la proteccin de los misiles anti-
tanques y proyectiles HEAT . Sin duda ellos hacen el depsito distintivo. Se encienden fcilmente y
se ajustan perfectamente . Volv a colocar los faros con un conjunto de Greif M60 luces y se ven
muy bien. Este fue mi primer uso de Testors Claro parte de cemento y me qued impresionado
con ella.

He utilizado un cilindro de aluminio de la pistola , lo que sin duda es una ventaja , pero el que
viene con el kit se ve bien . Tambin us una antena Minimica . La construccin era sencillo hasta
que llegu al cableado de los lanzadores de granadas de humo. Usted necesitar proporcionar su
propio hilo de esto y tengo un carrete de pensar cable negro. El kit viene con soportes para sujetar
el cable hacia abajo. Estos hilos se ejecuta desde un accesorio en la parte superior de la torreta a
los lanzadores de granadas de humo . No es difcil de lograr . El cable para el reflector viene con el
kit y es muy agradable. He dejado suficiente para al menos un tanque ms .

Pintura se realiz en tres etapas , incluyendo algunos repintes . Me ha preparado el tanque con
Testors Primer Gray , que le da un buen punto de partida . Luego us un poco de spray verde y
marrn claro slo Testors pinturas que tengo, aerografa una pauta aleatoria. Mis negros
simplemente se negaron a rociar adecuadamente, haciendo un lo ! Yo pint durante gran parte
del negro y pincel pint en Choas - Negro , que es un bonito , color oscuro. Esto era demasiado
oscuro y demasiado verde para la cubierta del depsito de todo verde, con un lavado de Umber ,
que baj el tono a la vez , dando un ligero degradado aspecto . Tambin hice lo mismo con las
pistas, que he usado en el kit.

Las ametralladoras que vienen con el kit estn muy bien, al igual que la mayora de las partes ms
pequeas.
El kit viene con un par de figuras, pero yo haba comprado la tripulacin del tanque de Corea
Academia , as que montado y pintado de las cifras de acuerdo con el arte de la caja . Ellos estn
bien moldeados y vienen con un montn de armas y accesorios agradables . Puse algunas cajas de
municin y otras cosas en el estante bullicio , tambin.

Las etiquetas son muy limitadas, pero los proporcionados funcionaba bien.

En general, fue un muy buen kit para construir y se lo recomiendo a cualquiera que este cansado
de la tarifa estndar .
