I.CourseContentandPhilosophy:
Thefocusofthetenthgradeyearisacontinuedmasteryofreadingandwritingskillsnecessary
forsuccessintheAdvancedPlacementLanguageandLiteraturecurriculum.Thegoalisan
increasedcompetencyincriticalthinking,criticalreading,andcriticalwriting.Studentswill
produceessaysinavarietyofrhetoricalforms,sentencesofgreatersophistication,andmore
difficultandvariedanalysisofliterature:fictionandnonfiction,poetryandprose.Avarietyof
literaryformswillbestudiedincludingpersonalnarratives,shortstories,expositorypieces,novels,
poetry,andplays.

GrammarandMechanics:Importantusageruleswillbecoveredearlyinthecourse.Generally,
however,grammarandmechanicswillbetaughtinconjunctionwithwritingthroughlessonson
style,sentencestructure,andediting.

IV.VocabularyFocus
PSAT/SATPreparationVocabularyProgram
ThisprogramisatwosemesterunitforEnglishIIPreAP.Thewordlistsarecompiledfrom
pastPSATtest,majorliteraryworksfortenthgrade,andtermsusedinAPtestsand
instruction.Testsareweeklyandcumulative.
Additionalvocabularywillcomefromteachermadewordlistsrelatedtospecificreading
assignments.

twodaystomakeupanyworkfromthefirstdayabsentandonedayforeachadditional
