M icrosleep
A m icrosleep is a brief and unintended loss of consciousness
characterised by head snapping, nodding or closing your eyes
for m ore than a couple of seconds.M icrosleeps occur w hen
you try to stay aw ake to perform a m onotonous task such as
driving.
M icrosleeps can last from a few seconds to several m inutes
and often people are not aw are that a m icrosleep has
occurred.
Duringa4 second microsleep acar travellingat 100km/h
will go 111 metres while completely out of the drivers
control.
The sleep & w ake cycle
The best w ay to prevent driver fatigue is to m ake sure you
have enough sleep before driving regardless of the length of
your trip. There are 3 sleep factors to consider before deciding
w hether or not to start driving.
1. Circadian rhythms
C ircadian rhythm s are physiological cycles that follow a daily
pattern.W e are "program m ed" by our circadian rhythm s to
sleep at night and to be aw ake during the day.
D uring night tim e hours and to a lesser extent during
afternoon "siesta" hours,m ost types of hum an perform ance
are significantly im paired, including our ability to drive.
Problem s occur if w e disrupt our natural sleep cycles (eg by
staying aw ake during the night),do not get enough sleep,or
get poor quality sleep.
C ircadian rhythm s cannot be reversed.Even if you have
been w orking nightshifts for m any years, your body w ill still
be program m ed to sleep at night.
2. Sleep debt
The hum an body requires a certain am ount of sleep each
night to function effectively. The average am ount of sleep a
person needs is 8 hours.W hen w e reduce the num ber of
hours w e sleep at night w e start to accum ulate w hat is
called a 'sleep debt'.
Sleep debt is defined as the difference betw een the hours
of sleep a person needs and the hours of sleep a person
actually gets.
For exam ple,if a person needs 8 hours of sleep per night
but only gets 6 hours of sleep one night, they have a sleep
debt of tw o hours. These lost hours of sleep need to be
replaced.
W hen w e have sleep debt, our tendency to fall asleep the
next day increases. The larger the sleep debt, the stronger
the tendency to fall asleep.
Sleep debt does not go aw ay by itself.Sleeping is the only
w ay to reduce your sleep debt.
3. Sleep inertia
Sleep inertia is the feeling of grogginess after aw akening and
tem porarily reduces your ability to perform even sim ple
tasks.
Sleep inertia can last from 1 m inute to 4 hours, but typically
lasts 15-30 m inutes.
The severity of sleep inertia is dependent on how long you
have been asleep and the stage of sleep at aw akening.
Effects can be severe if a person is very sleep deprived or
has been w oken from a deep sleep stage.H ow ever, sleep
inertia can usually be reversed w ithin 15 m inutes by activity
and noise.
Sleep inertia can cause im pairm ent of m otor and cognitive
functions and can affect a person's ability to drive safely.
Sleep inertia can be very dangerous for people w ho drive
in the early m orning hours and shortly after w aking up
from a sleep.
Stopping to rest on
N SW roads
Driver Reviver
To help reduce driver fatigue, around 100 D river Reviver
stops operate across N SW at peak holiday tim es,such as
C hristm as, Easter and long w eekends (Please note that
operating tim es m ay vary).
If there are no D river Reviver stops operating,be sure to
stop som ew here else such as a rest area.
D river Reviver is operated by volunteer com m unity groups
including the Volunteer Rescue A ssociation,State Em ergency
Service and Lions C lubs International, and are proudly
sponsored by Bushells Tea and supported by the RTA .
D river Reviver stops are a safe place w here you can stop for
a free biscuit,a cup of Bushells Tea or a coffee.
Rem em ber,D river Reviver stops only operate during peak
holiday tim es and on long w eekends.
Rest areas
Rest areas are places w here you can park safely, get out of
your car and refresh yourself before continuing your journey.
They are available 24 hours a day,all year round and are
clearly signposted.
Service centres, petrol
stations, parks and country
tow ns are other places you
can stop and take a break
from driving.
D ont ignore the early
w arning signs:
yaw ning
poor concentration
tired eyes
restlessness
drow siness
slow reactions
boredom
oversteering
H igh risk tim es for fatigue crashes are
tim es w hen you w ould norm ally be asleep.
The risk of a fatal fatigue crash is four tim es
greater betw een 10pm and 6am than the rest
of the day.
A high num ber of fatigue crashes also occur
betw een 1pm and 3pm .
C hristm as and other public holidays are peak
periods for fatigue crashes.
D rivers of all ages are involved in fatal fatigue
crashes.
D rivers in country areas are at greater risk of
having a fatigue crash.
D river fatigue crashes can happen on short
trips too.
