NEW CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Act up! (Jen Drysdale)


Lets get those little actors moving! Drama can be fun for older kids but no one has more fun
acting up than the younger ones! This is pre-drama at its best! Well play charades; well
read books and then act them out with each student having their own special role. Well have
fun each week developing skills that might take them to the big screen!
All the Way From A to Z K-3
Ready to lay a foundation for reading while engaging in a world of play? Come cruse
through the alphabet while creating a take-away book that illustrates all 26 letters.
Colorful picture books, lively songs, and interesting games will help increase phonemic
awareness and build a rich vocabulary.
American Literature: The Dark Frigate
The Dark Frigate, a Newberry Award winning book about brutal buccaneers, pirates,
bloody battles and a bold, spirited hero. Set in the time of King Charles and Oliver
Cromwell, lessons will include English and North American history, a study of vocabulary,
King James English vernacular and tall ships.

Americas First People
Enhance your social studies curriculum with this hands-on approach to studying Native
Americans. We will make crafts and do activities that relate to Indian life. Through these
activities students will learn to recognize famous Americans in history, recognize historical
Native American culture and customs and understand that we must work for needs and
for wants.


All About Animals
Come learn about animals- where they live, what they do, and why they do it. We will
learn how to classify animals into six categories: mammals, birds, fish, amphibians,
reptiles, and arthropods.


Art by the Month 4-6
Lets craft! Well take each month and do a related craft project. We might use leaves in
the fall, make masks for Halloween and Christmas ornaments in December. Some projects
will be smaller and some will take the whole month! You can be sure that Art by the
Month will be something youll look forward to every week!



Art through the Holidays
Get up to your elbows in tissue paper, clay, Mod Podge and tempera paint as we enjoy craft
and artwork projects that you can give as gifts or use for holiday decorations.

Artistic Expressions
Salt dough creations, paper making, making cards, jewelry making, painting and other
crafts for the older student. This class is similar to last semester's Salt Dough class, but

Blast into the Past 4-6
This class is a history class designed to take snap shots of history using graphic novels
and other activities to blast into the past of a historic event or figure of American
History. What if you were there when Paul Revere took his historic ride, warning everyone
that the British were coming! What would it have been like to live in the town that the
feared Pirate Blackbeard terrorized until the people came together to put an end to the
problem? Come Blast into the Past with us to examine the significance of certain events in
our nations past! This class is designed to be fun and there will be group activities to be
enjoyed.

Composition Writing 4-6
We invite you to come and learn about the building blocks of writing. Whether you feel
you have a good handle on writing or composition, or youve never really delved into
itthis class will benefit you. We will be learning about the mechanics of writing and, yes,
that does include some grammar and sentence structure! We will start with how to
compose a well written paragraph and move from there to short essays that may include
narrative, persuasive, and other forms of composition that will hopefully prepare you for
all types of writing challenges you will have in the future. Come and invest in your future!

The greatest of Conspiracy Theorys
This course is designed to encourage students to use their critical thinking and research
skills as we look at a series of conspiracy theories and, as a class, try to figure out what
really happened. If you like watching the news, history, investigative reporting, mystery,
and using your brain to sift through the clues this course is for you! Along with
investigating specific conspiracy theories we will also look at the why they exist, what it
looks like to make informed decisions about events, how to sift through sources for
reliability, and create tools for understanding current events in a world of media biases
and agendas.




Cook & Tell K-3
Cook up some surprisingly irresistible creations "Pumpkin Spice Buddies, Apple Pie
Cookies or Cupcake Pizzas" as we learn names of ingredients, describe taste and
textures, and brainstorm meal ideas together.


Cook It!
Who wouldnt want to learn to make the most delicious, most loved, kid-friendly
recipes? We will be making food that is easy to make, with standard ingredients. Now
kids can cook it themselves!
Creative Writing 6-8
This class is designed for those wannabe budding authors! We will study the art of
writing including story elements and literary devices. We will delve into the writing
process to facilitate that creative expression just dying to be released! Do you have
ideas for stories just bouncing around in your head? Have you already dabbled in
writing? If so, this class is for youso sharpen your imagination and your pencils and
lets get to it! You will enjoy learning about writing and participating at the
Roundtable with your fellow scribes. There will be some homework, but this is just
to further enhance the creative process for your own creations. Please come join us!

Creative Writing 9-12
This class is designed for those who love writing and want to improve upon their writing
skills. We will work on assigned writing assignments, but the goal will be to get inspired
to write your own works of art painted with words! Good writing takes some work
and dedication to a craft. Come and find your inner author. There will be a little
homework (just a little). Come dip your pens into a mystery, an adventure, or a fantasy!
There will be group writing projects as well, please come and join us and bring your
imagination!

Current World Events
Have you read the news paper lately? Events that transpire daily will serve as our content.
Students will gain the tools and background to interpret these events as a social scientist.
They will learn physical, political, and cultural geography of the world, get up to speed and
stay informed about world and domestic current events, analyze news items and organize
them using the Big 12 categories (A cause and effect framework that enables students
to gain a deeper understanding of root causes and associated impacts of world problems).






Davinci! Become a Davinci
Leonardo Da Vinci was an artist, and scientist with an amazing array of inventions. We
will spend some building some of his ingenious inventions along with learning about this
era of discovery that defined the Renaissance.




Easy Fixins
Food that is easy and fun to prepare creates a feeling of self-confidence in the kitchen.
This class gives kids an early start of the love of cooking that could last a lifetime.


Elementary Math K-2
You see and use numbers every day. Lets get finger-licking dirty with numbers! If you love
getting your hands dirty and you love food, this is the class for you! Were going to use
real things you can see, taste, and touch to learn the basics of elementary math.


Elementary Reading K-3
Mystery? Science? Art? Math? Social Studies? Whatever your favorite subject is, this is the
class for you! Come use your creativity and imagination! Bring your favorite books to class
and well explore the essentials of reading while we investigate your book. Well be
investigating crazy cool topics such as spelling, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary,
phonics, and word analysis all within the covers of your own favorite books!



Enriched Math 3-6

Does math seem boring, hard, and frustrating? Most of you already have the basics of
math, but are getting hung up on a few areas. This is the class for you. Well go over the
stubborn areas in math that trouble you, but were going to have fun while we do it!
Playing games and eating snacks is one of the best ways to learn those frustrating math
strategies. How? Youll see once you join my class!



Fencing: The Art of Fencing
Are you a driven, dedicated individual? Do you have a passion for history? Do you want
to play with swords? Fencing is for you!
Come experience the time-honored tradition of fencing! Through the study of this
dynamic and engaging martial art and Olympic Sport, you will learn the art of the sword
and how to implement it against your fellow classmates in a fun, exciting atmosphere.
We'll learn the basics, hone our skills and compete with each other, building friendships
and camaraderie along the way as we strive to our ultimate goal: competing at the
annual Fence 'Til You Drop Tournament hosted by Mead High School at the end of the
year.



Film Communications
You will experience film in a whole new light by seeing the messages communicated
within movies, the work involved and cast and crew behind each film. Students will view
and enjoy movies and learn from them. This class will give new meanings and enjoyment
to the cinematic world. We will look at movies of different kinds by watching in class and
out of class movies chosen by the instructor. There will be discussion about the themes,
messages, cast, crew and companies involved.


Folk Tales & Fables
Come take a new look at folk tales and fables. This will be a comprehensive class focusing
on art projects and writing in response to beloved stories.








Forensic Science
Become part of the forensics squad! A crime has been committed and you must determine
who the primary suspect is! You will use the scientific method & problem solving skills
while cracking this mystery. We will learn impression analysis, physical property analysis,
fiber analysis, drug analysis, & fingerprinting. Do you have what it takes to be the next
science detective?
Geography & Cultures
Get to know MR. LIP (The five themes of geography) as we make our own Continent
Twister game, sample some authentic recipes from different countries and cultures, and
find out where in the world our food/cloths comes from. We will do seasonal projects like
Scarecrow Confusion and NFL Matchup to sharpen our research skills by using atlases,
encyclopedias, globes, and other reference materials.

Handbell Choir
Little faces light up when they make music. This class will be a fun opportunity to work
together, learn some music basics along with performing before an audience. It'll be a
wonderful experience to share our music; no previous music instruction is needed.


Health & Nutrition K-2
This is a basic Health class for young folks to learn about good health habits and
nutrition. We will have some fun projects that will involve some hooey-gooey fun to
keep the students interested! We will learn how to make healthy eating choices, proper
hygiene, good dental habits and much more! The class is designed to enhance and
reinforce the good habits they are learning at home. Hope to see your child in class!

History Detectives
In this class the goal will be for students to journey their way through the true nature of
history. Being a historian is much like being a detective. Some students enjoy solving
mysteries and this will be our learning approach. Students will become detectives,
investigate the evidence, search for clues and crack the case! Students will be
provided with an engaging question to guide their enquiry. They will be presented with
a task to help answer that question: For Example, a case we will be working on is titled
What Caused the Jamestown Failure of 1610? Students will be provided with the
resources to answer this question and put together a hypothesis of what happened.
This class is meant to be fun so the students will enjoy the mystery and end up learning
some history!
Horsemanship
Saddle up because this is gonna be a fun ride! Let's learn all about horses! What do horses eat
and how do they digest their food? We'll take a look at skeletal and muscular build, along with
how to daily care for a horse. If you want to know all the different breeds and colors giddy-up
into this class!

Stuck on a math or science concept or how to write something? This class is here for you!
If youre not stuck on anything but need an hour to study or catch up, come join us!



Inland Northwest History
Learn fascinating information about our state and the Inland Northwest. Fun projects create
hands on learning that will imprint a historical memory you wont forget.

Intro to Mythology
We will study and learn about mythology in its classical expression by surveying what is
myth and different characters and stories of ancient times. This is an introductory course
and the goal is to touch briefly on the times, history and culture of Greek and Roman
myths, the stories, characters and meanings of each and to give reasons for studying myth
and to see what is myth. The student will learn about, appreciate and enjoy mythology, its

value to Greek and Roman culture and its relevance today. We will survey Mythology,
looking at the themes, the lives of the characters, stories and the events that took place
and the lessons that can be learned.
Inventions that Changed the World


Journey with Lewis & Clark
Many fun, hands-on activities bring the Lewis & Clark journey to life in this hands-on class.
Make buffalo masks, Fort Clatsop with Popsicle sticks and sew your own moccasins. Through
these activities students will learn to recognize famous Americans in history, recognize
historical Native American culture and customs, explore locations on a map and understand
that we must work for needs and for wants.
Journey on the Oregon Trail
Learn what life was like traveling 2000 miles in a wagon train. This will be a fun hands-on
class that will reinforce your social studies curriculum. Through these activities students will
learn to Identify map keys and the compass rose, read a variety of types of maps, describe
and compare patterns of life over time in Washington state, including history, Describe how
people adapt to their environment to meet basic human needs and concerns and
immigration, settlement and interaction of cultures (1830-statehood).



Lets Get a Start on Art
All great artists have to start somewhere, and this is the class to start with! We will learn
the basics of art while creating some really fun projects! We will make a color wheel and
learn primary colors, do some line art, and mixed medium projects! Each week we will
have something new to do and learn! Bring your play clothes because we're going to get
good and messy!


Life Skills
We will work together as a team (a great life skill) as we learn to fill out job
applications, prepare a resume, gain time and money management skills, and learn
basic first aid and CPR. We will engage in healthy competition (determination,
visualization, and sportsmanship) while learning skills like changing a tire, how to tie a
variety of knots, and take a written phone message. Through teamwork and
competition we will draw on cooperation, concentration, coordination, and creativity
things worth striving for in their own right



Lighthouses: Lighting Up History
Lighthouses are a beauty of their own but, beyond a home decor, they stood as an
important part of building our country. This class will allow us to explore history, lore
and science from a very unique perspective. Through experiments and craft fun, we'll
learn about these important towers and how they were used in preventing countless
misfortunes at sea.

Literacy Loop 3-6
Time to bring our favorite books to life! Together we will turn pages in our favorite
stories, engage in lively dialogue, and select artistic and theatrical methods of sharing
what we learned. If you like hands-on projects such as creating true-to-life dioramas,
comic strips, or scrapbooks youll find your place here. Maybe youre more on the
dramatic side. If so, come prepared to direct and produce a readers theatre!
Mad About Science
Students will learn the scientific method through hands on experiments and explorations
geared toward a younger group. Subjects covered will be seasons, astronomy, animals,
insects, and others. Discover the order of God's creation and how science affects our
everyday lives. We will briefly explore some famous scientists.

Mastering Multiplication through Games
Who knew math could be so fun?! Good multiplication skills will help you develop a better
understanding of advanced math. But no one ever said it had to be boring! Each week will we
focus on a set of multiplication facts and memorize these through gamesyou wont even
know youre learning! We will also focus on a clear understanding of the relationship between
multiplication and division. Even those math shy folks will enjoy this one!

Meet the Artist
This class is for students who are curious about famous artists. We are going to learn about
artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet and Pollock, just to name a few. Not only will we be
learning about the artist, but each week we will have a set amount of time to replicate one of
their famous paintings. This class will push you to become a better artist by understand the
greats before us!
Math on the Move
This class is an active way to learn basic math skills. We all know it can be tough for those
little ones to sit still but who said you have to?! Well have fun learning basic math skills
like adding, subtracting, basic fractions and multiplication with such things as M&Ms and
full body games. We might divide a pie to share or see how long it takes to group objects

together in timed games. This is a fun way to start your math journey!







Mine Craft
This class can be taken as a History credit class for 9-12 grades. Students must have a
Minecraft account.
Students will utilize their own personal Minecraft accounts to log onto the
Minecrafthomeschool.com curriculum. Minecraft Homeschool will provide the online
teacher who will guide the student through the course with feedback both in chat form
within the server and in a personal email. Students will have weekly assignments and
projects to complete in the subject area they have enrolled in. They can complete their
assignments at home and will also have a time during the Parent Partnership classes to
work together in a lab setting where they can share ideas, troubleshoot, and receive
academic assistance from a Parent Partnership staff. Students will receive grades from
Minecraft Homeschool as this course is taken for credit and these will be combined with
an attendance and participation grade from Parent Partnership.


Myths & Legends K-2
Monsters, amazing real life creatures, and people that can keep you on your toes, as you
learn about the history of some of the lesser known Myths & Legends. Fun projects make
these all come to life in the imagination. Join us for a weird and creepy ride of your life.

Nighttime Discoveries
Have fun recognizing and identifying the constellations in our skies; also exposure to the
planets, meteors and other basic facts of these creations of light. The student will have
opportunity to see displays of many constellations that will enable them to locate them
independently at home. We will also build our own replicas of some of the beautiful starry
formations. Earth, space, systems, models, and simulation.



Oh the Places Youll Go K-3 and 4-6
Travel around the world with us as we read about and research countries throughout the
seven continents. Well create international crafts, enjoy ethnic cuisine, and practice
foreign words. Gaining geographical knowledge and valuable map skills will broaden a


sense of place in the larger world.


People & Places
We'll explore different cultures from countries all over the world! We'll experiment with
aboriginal art from Australia, listen to tribal music from Africa, and maybe, if we're super
brave, even eat some fried bugs like they do in Thailand! Come to this class with eager
minds and listening ears, 'cause we're going to explore the world!



Pilgrims Life/Real Life
Bring the Colonial era to life with hands-on activities. Discover what life was like during
this time in history with fun activities like Mayflower puzzle, Pilgrim paper dolls,
authentic recipes, games and more! Through these activities students will learn to
identify map keys and the compass rose, describe how people adapt to their
environment to meet basic human needs and concerns and describe similarities and
differences between families, communities and cultures, past and present.

Popular Mechanics for Kids
Everyone knows Popular Mechanics can be interestingbut this is Popular Mechanics for
KIDS! A fun, energetic way to bring excitement to science! Each week we will watch a short
episode of the award winning childrens program, Popular Mechanics for Kids, hosted by kids
and very enjoyable to watch. We will walk the journey of a spaceship or the path our garbage
takes from us to recycle. We will understand submarines and roller coasters and get an inside
look at special effects. Then each week will include an activity to go along with that weeks
topic. You cant get this much fun in any science book!

Recycle, Repair, Reuse
Add repurpose, rebuild, revise and renew to that class name.....We will exhaust the prefix
"re" as we rethink how we look at an empty cereal box or an old tire. Could that beautiful
piece of art work really be made out of toilet paper tubes? Are you really going to throw
that kitty litter bucket away? These are questions you will begin to ask. Your eyes may
never look at things the same way again. Among other things we will make beads out of old
magazines, a backpack from a t-shirt, and a caddy out of tin cans that will have your mom
asking you to make one for her.

Road Trip USA
Come with us as we take on the adventure of learning about the USA. We will visit all 50
states and learn about historical events, landmarks, state symbols, and more!



Spanish 3-6
Uno, dos, tres Many of you may know this is 1, 2, 3 in Spanish. In this class, well learn
to read, write, and talk in Spanish. Come explore the Spanish culture, by tasting their
food, reading and writing their words, and talking with me in Spanish!

Spanish K-2
Hola! Coma estas? Hablas Espaol? If you know what this says or dont know what
this says This is the class for you! Come explore the Spanish culture with me! Well
learn their language, eat their food, and listen to their music. Youll have the time of
your life, not to mention, youre sure to laugh while youre in here.
Storybook Writing 3-5
Come and join the fun with us and write your own book! In this class, we will learn about
story elements and the art of writing and illustrating your own story. Students will
brainstorm their ideas and translate them into words and art! This class is really fun for
students to participate with one another and they get so inspired by each others work.
When the stories are completed they are sent into a publisher and students will receive a
professional looking hardbound book. This class is perfect for the active imagination!

Textile Art
Learn about the art of Quilting as well as Appliqu! We will use fabric and found objects
to explore the visual world. Each student will make an individual art quilt of an ocean
scene, a rural or mountain scene and possibly a bonus piece of your choice.



The Good, the Bad & the Ugly
This course is meant to encourage students to discover some of our most infamous villains,
hated traitors and unknown bad guys that helped shape our world today. Whether they
single handedly forced the government to create an elite force of investigators or had income
tax laws named after them, these guys influenced the future and it is those guys this class will
learn about. We will not be covering evil characters in history and the focus is not on the
act, but on how they influenced our society. Using a variety of short readings in class, some
clips from documentaries, portraits, time lines, and firsthand accounts from witnesses the
class will explore one new character a week.


The Mad Scientist
Slip on your lab coat, and let's do some mad science! We're going to have some good clean
fun, though we may not always end up clean at the end! Slime, molecules, fruit batteries
and atoms are all things we will experiment with! But, remember, sometimes in the
science world experiments can go wrong! But that's all part of the fun!







The Wonders of Weather
If you have ever looked into the sky and watched a thunderstorm role in standing in awe of
the changes brought on by weather... If you have ever been a little confused by what the
weather man is talking about, pressure high low? Barometer what? Jet stream huh?.... Or
have you ever been just a little bit curious about this thing we call weather that can one
minute mean fun in the sun and the next torrents of rain and thunder cascading through the
sky!! This class is for you! Each week we will learn about a new tool for weather prediction
and the science behind changing weather, from the different forms of clouds to the levels of
hurricanes! Welcome all storm chasers, weather watchers, and science lovers!

Tour our Literary world
To experience a tour of the Literary World we will be reading, hearing and discussing works
of literature. The student will experience great books, parts of books and stories that will
teach, excite, encourage and challenge them. They will come to enjoy and value the art of
reading and of books and to know what literature is.We will take a look at works of literature
from authors such as Dr. Seuss, Shakespeare, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and others. There will
be readings, discussion and lectures about authors, books, plays and stories.


Tuesdays Chef
Tuesday's Chef 3-6 - Learn your way around the kitchen from A-Z (Appliances to Zester)
as we explore the fun of making dishes that are tempting to the taste buds "Peanut
Butter Texas Sheet Cake" and engaging to the eyes "Strawberry Roses and Whip Cream
Teddy Bears" .
Tuesday's Chef 6-12 - Find out just how creative, fun, and thrifty cooking can be as we
learn our way around the kitchen from A-Z (Appliances to Zester). We will explore the
fun of making dishes that are tempting to the taste buds "Peanut Butter Texas Sheet
Cake" and engaging to the eyes "Strawberry Roses and Whip Cream Teddy Bears". We
will decide if you need to spend $10 on that avocado slicer or if a spoon and butter knife
does the same job. And see if teamwork makes it possible to prepare and entire meal in
on hour?







Wings
Join this class to learn the basic forces needed to build, fly and control paper
airplanes...lots of learning and lots of fun. We will cover form, space, energy, force,
and design and you will make some planes you never thought you could!

World History through Projects 4-6, K-3
Lets go back to Ancient Times! We will work through the craft and activity projects from The
Story of World Book One: Ancient Times. We might build The Great Wall of China or make our
own paper or design our own Celtic Border, build a board game or reassemble a broken Roman
pot! All hands-on activities that will bring Ancient History to life!
World Leaders throughout History
To learn about historical leaders from around the globe who have had an impact on history
we will glimpse into the lives, times and events of some of historys heroes and villains.
Lets examine their lives and learn from their successes and failures and to apply it today.



Writing for Publication 7-12
Ever wanted to see your words in print? Did you know there are a number of markets and
contests available to young writers? Whether you are interested in writing short stories,
articles, essays, poems, plays, greeting cards, or your own blog, well delve into the nuts
and bolts of freelance writing.
