APUSH Scopes Trial

The Scopes-Monkey Trial was a trial about John Scopes, a high school teacher,
being arrested because he was teaching students about evolution. Clarence Darrow acted
as Scopes’ attorney. The defense team also had Arthur Garfield Hays and Dudley Field
Malone as its attorneys. The prosecution team had William Jennings Bryan and Tom
Stewart as its attorneys. The jury found Scopes guilty and was ordered to pay a $100 fine.
However, a year later the Tennessee Supreme Court reversed the decision, and later
dismissed the case. The 1955 play, Inherit the Wind, was written in memory of the trial.
