Lesson Plan

Year Level(s): 10
Location: Coodanup Community College
Learning Area/ACARA Focus: S+E/Geography: Natural and ecological hazards
an overview of the nature of natural hazards and ecological hazards (ACHGE012)
Date/Time: 28/8/14 (11:15 to 11:45am)
Lesson Focus: Ghost nets

Background Information:

The teacher has informed that students are motivated by treats, such as
chocolates
The class is the bottom mainstream S+E year 10 class
Some students have short attention spans and are not very motivated
They can be distracted easily
There are 2 students who are distracted by their mobiles
Students have been known to rock up to class late
This term the topic is Environmental Change and Management they are
enjoying the immediacy of this topic

Learning Purpose(s):

By the end of the lesson, students should understand the following about ghost
nets:
What ghost nets are
Where they are a problem in Australia, and where they are coming from
What is being done to combat this problem, and how they are removed
What ways we can safely and sustainably dispose of the nets (including
for personal use)

Preparation:

Create a Prezi presentation (needs a computer and projector)
Create a worksheet to go along with the presentation
Print out an information sheet for myself
Buy treats to reward the students

Time: Learning Experiences:
1. How will I engage the learners?

Before the students arrive, write on the whiteboard the learning
purpose/intention of the lesson: Understand what is a ghost net, and what
impact they have on the marine environment

When they arrive, greet each student one by one

Then begin the lesson by saying something like: Good morning guys, how

Lesson Plan
are you all going? Let me introduce myself Im Mr Perkins

Then highlight the learning purpose/intention on the board

Ask them what they already know about ghost nets, or what they think
ghost nets actually are brainstorm on the whiteboard

Then say: Ive got a challenge for us. Weve only got about 20 minutes and
in that time, we need to complete this worksheet. Ive even got treats for
those with the highest marks!

Hand out the worksheets to the students, and make sure that they put their
name on the worksheet

2. Student tasks/activities:

Inform the students that as the Prezi presentation is going, they need to
complete the worksheet concurrently (also, tell them that the questions
arent necessarily in the same order as they appear in the presentation)

Now go through the presentation with the students, expanding on the main
points using the information sheet

As the presentation is going, make sure that the students are completing
the worksheet

If anyone needs help, give them help but dont simply tell them the answer
let the students find out the answers for themselves

As the students are working, go around the class and mark as they go

Once the presentation has finished, ask the students if they have everything
answered

If not, see what they have left to answer and go to the appropriate slide on
the presentation

Once sure that all the students have fully completed the worksheets,
quickly add up everyones marks and work out who has achieved the
highest mark

Then give treats out to the students who have achieved the highest marks

Thank all the students for completing the worksheet, and to such a high
standard (if applicable)

3. Conclusion:

Do a quick wrap up of the topic:

Quickly assess the students to see if they have met the learning objective by
asking questions

First, collect all the worksheets in and switch of the presentation on the
projector

Next, ask the following questions to the class and/or to particular students
(use the popsicle sticks with the students names on them to aid in this):
Who is helping to retrieve these nets?
What ways can we dispose of the nets?
Can anyone paraphrase to me what the 6R principal is?
What are the nets made out of now, and why?
Why are the nets more harmful to the environment nowadays?

Give treats out to any students with outstanding answers

Once I have finished questioning, commend them for their hard work and
for their attention, and then hand the worksheets back to the students for
them to keep

Hand the lesson back to Fleur Higginbotham

Assessment and Evaluation:

Evaluate the performance of the students in the following ways:
By marking the work of the students individually and correcting any
answers in front of them, or by going through the answers as a class, and
letting the students mark and correct their own work
By asking students questions and analysing their responses
By seeing if they are paying attention to what they should be doing

Evaluate the performance of myself by asking the following questions:
Did the students enjoy my lesson?
Did the students learn anything? Did they meet all, if any, of the learning
objectives?
Were the students asking questions about what they were supposed to
actually do? Were they confused? Did I explain the task well enough?
Were they asking questions about the ghost nets themselves?
Were the students disruptive or/and distracted in any way?
Did the lesson finish on time?
Did the students finish all of the work?

Lesson Plan
Reflection (After The Lesson):

The lesson did go roughly to plan, however I was quite nervous (and this
was obvious)
I forgot to make use of the popsicle sticks when asking particular students to
answer questions instead, I asked them to put their hands up but this made
me fall into the trap of asking the same students over and over
Offering treats for correct answers really worked the trick this made the
students pay attention to what I was doing (even the one student who was
distracted on his phone began to pay attention)
I subconsciously repeated the phrase: You know the students picked me
up on this and began to mimic me, without me even knowing until my
mentor teacher told me after the lesson, but at least it didnt get to a stage
where it was having a detrimental effect on the lesson and my teaching
I finished the lesson just on time, and the majority of the students had
almost completely filled out their worksheets
While marking and asking questions, I came to realise that the students had
taken in knowledge; therefore my lesson was somewhat successful
During the lesson, I noticed that a student was distracted and falling behind
so I went over to him to help him out I gave him my Prezi presentation
overview (that I had printed off earlier for myself) so he could finish of his
worksheet at his own pace while I went on with the presentation with the
rest of the class
