Character Analysis Essay
Crooks is a discriminated and disempowered black stable-buck, but what makes matters worse is that he
is the only black person at the ranch. Crooks is very lonely because he is avoided by almost everybody at
the ranch because of his race. He has a crooked back which puts him at physical disadvantages, which
plays a part in why most if not all the ranch hands jeer him. Crooks feels that he should be one among the
others and that it is unfair that he is not allowed to sleep in the bunkhouse and play games with the rest of
the ranch hands. Behaviorally, Crooks is very open about his lonliness, he explains his situation to Lennie
without the slightest bit of hesitation. Crooks truly believes that everybody needs to have someone to rely
on at the toughest of times or someone just to talk to. Emotionally and psychologically Crooks is good
natured and kind at heart he is a very welcoming character. His needs are simple, he just wants someone
to talk to, he doesnt care who it is. For example, when Lennie came into Crookss room Crooks
portrayed that he Lennie was not welcome in his room, but truly Crooks was excited to have someone to
talk to. He became more jubilant when Candy came too. Crooks is good natured and kind at heart
Ren, on the other hand is a lot like Crooks in many ways. Ren feels like he has been underrated
his whole entire life because of his physical appearance. Everyone who came through Saint Anthonys to
adopt a child looked at him dismayingly and Ren was on the verge of losing hope of ever being adopted,
but like Crooks Ren is a sharp and emotionally strong character. Ren, emotionally like Crooks is very
open about his life. He explains to Tom about his life at Saint Anthonys and his two chums Brom and
Ichy. Behaviorally, Ren does what is told and most of the time does not argue, just like Crooks. Like
Crooks Ren always longed for someone to count on. In Rens case he wants a family all Crooks wants is a
companion to be with. Both of them have never had a true companion in their life, Ren accepts everyone
and doesnt care who it may be. He forms a relationship with Dolly which lasts and they become good
friends. Though Crooks does not find a companion, he understands what true human companionship is
and learns to appreciate it.
