Goal Setting My goals are to: 1) Reflect continuously on my teaching practices to create personalized student instruction. 2) Immerse in professional growth opportunities for iPad integration and inquiry learning. 3) Mentor and collaborate with colleagues to share and extend this learning.
Action Plan I plan to work towards achieving the goals by: 1) Participating in professional workshops, conferences and campus committees. 2) Planning continuously with TRT, AT, and my grade level--with a special focus on the new teachers. 3) Designing an interactive professional website that helps me to reflect on my work as a teacher, graduate student and instructional facilitator.
Reflection of my Professional Growth and Development
Looking back at this school year, I am pleased with my progress in professional growth and development. Some actions during 2013-2014 that furthered this development were: Mentoring Amy and Ali--especially in the areas of differentiated curriculum and parent communication. Transitioning to a 1-to-1 iPad environment. Encouraging my grade level to personalize students' word-work curriculum with Words Their Way (instead of continuing with second grade spelling workbooks). This included: o Teaching my team how to 1) assess and diagnose the students' needs, and 2) to implement each group's word-work lessons strategically and mindfully; o Designing and preparing all the materials for the grade level (2013-14 & 2014-15); o Collaborating with Liz on word sorting activities for the iPad, which drastically reduced the amount of paper copies; o Leading reflective conversations with the grade level in how to improve and change the instructional design for the next year. Attending and implementing ideas from professional workshops: o Math Workshop with Cathy Fosnot (Punahou, August 2013) o 'The Daily 5' (Honolulu, October 2013) o Learning and the Brain (Boston, November 2013) o The iPad Summit (Boston, November 2013) o Growth Mindset with Carol Dweck (Punahou, June 2014) o The Brain Symposium with Mike Walker (Punahou, June 2014) Designing multiple iterations of thematic, inquiry-based curriculum for my classroom that incorporates students' interests and iPad integration. Developing a professional website that incorporates: o Examples of student work providing a digital archive of ideas o Slideshows of student engagement o Professional documents to include my resume, cycle goals/evaluations/reflections, letters of recommendation and verifications of employment o Research projects and papers from graduate school o Examples of units, lessons and activities in varying formats o "My Inspiration for Teaching" Reflection o Movie files of students reflecting on their inquiry learning o Examples of formative and summative assessment tools o Forms of communication with parents, to include monthly calendars, newsletters and conference preparations o Special thank-you letters Becoming more involved in campus-wide activities, to include the President's Advisory Council, Carnival 2014: Sound Booth Parent Chair, and Mindset Mentors. Working with Doug Kiang to change Sound Booth processes: from hand- written announcements to digital messaging on the iPads (thereby reducing paper waste in Sound Booth while providing a digital, word-searchable archive of all communication for that year.)
Despite this progress in Professional Growth and Development, I'd like to continue working towards Standard VII for a second year. My first goal"Reflect continuously on my teaching practices for personalized student instruction"is an on-going career objective that I don't want to ever classify as 'completed' or 'mastered'. I believe that teachers should be on an endless quest of reflection and instructional modification for every child. With a new group of students each year, this learning journey should be dynamic and perpetual. However, the strategies by which I personalize my students' learning can be honed (in a general sense) as I find what works for their optimal learning. But I want to keep the understanding that there are no absolutes that can be applied to every child or to every class. It is to this end that I approach my goals for Cycle Four. Next year, I will integrate the steps of the Action Plan so that my personal growth and my collaboration with colleagues are better streamlined. To do this, I will use my professional website as a constant reflective tool and work more closely with Joanne and Ali to create a "one classroom, three teachers" model. In addition, I will implement a large change with my students: eliminate the Progressfolio binders, and replace them with student-created ePortfolios and personalized webpages. The arduous [yet critical and powerful] process of changing my own teaching portfoliofrom a tangible binder with 19 years of pictures and documents, to an interactive website organizing my journey towards personalized student learningwill facilitate a more meaningful and productive transition in the classroom. I look forward to taking this journey with the children next year! We will teach each other how to best document growth using a digital format. I am excited for the change to ePortfolios, because now students won't have only a paper record of their 2 nd grade year.they can capture their voices, expressions, verbal thought processes, personal interests and favorite activities in video and audio formats. Learning alongside my students as we create these ePortfolios is the greatest professional growth and development "action plan" I can imagine!
