COURSE SYLLABUS
SPOTSWOOD HIGH SCHOOL

TEACHER: Ms. Wong SCHOOL YEAR: 2014-2015
E-MAIL: jwong@spotswood.k12.nj.us COURSE TITLE: College Prep Geometry
ROOM NUMBER: 507

COURSE DESCRIPTION: College Prep Geometry is a course which is designed for students to develop
special concepts and insight into the relationships between plane figures, including points, lines, polygons,
angles, and circles. Algebraic principles, including the use of coordinates, are applied to geometric
problems. Measurements of two and three-dimensional figures will be explored. To appreciate the power
of logic as a tool for life, the concept of proof is a focus of the course. Real-world problem solving will be
highlighted in the study of each unit. Technology will be used for instruction and exploration. Reading,
problem-solving, communicating, and reasoning using precise mathematical language are emphasized
throughout.

- Note: Students are expected to utilize the concepts from Algebra I throughout the CP Geometry course.

UNITS OF STUDY: The topics to be studied are as follows: Congruence, Proof, and Construction;
Similarity, Proof, and Trigonometry; Three Dimensional Figures; Circles With and Without Coordinates;
Connecting Algebra & Geometry Through Coordinates; Applications to Probability.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:
Agenda book
Three-ring, 2 binder with 5 dividers and white lined paper.
o Label each section: References, Do Now, Notes, Homework, and Tests/Quizzes/Reviews.
Keep this syllabus in the References section.)
2 pencils and an eraser
Correcting pen (red, blue, or any other bright color)
Graphing calculators (TI-83, 84, 84 Plus) If you cannot obtain one, please speak to me at the end
of class and I can provide one for you that will be kept in class.

HOMEWORK: Students often claim, I dont know how to study for math! If you do not know how, you
will learn this year. Homework is essential in succeeding in any math class and is one form of studying.

Homework will be assigned most nights, but will not be checked every night.
If you dont understand a problem,
o Look back to your notes and TRY.
o Write what you are confused about and ASK the next day.
Complete (and try the ones you dont understand) all questions in order to receive full credit.

LATE HOMEWORK:
o Unless you are absent, late homework is not accepted.
o If you are absent, you have the number of days you were absent to make up the
homework and it is your responsibility to show it to me. If you dont show it to me, I will
assume you do not have it.

2
GRADING PROCEDURES: Students will be graded at multiple instances each week through the use of class
work assignments, homework assessments, quizzes, tests, application projects, and mathematical practice
assessments. Student performance will be reflected as a marking period grade four times per year, and will
be based upon the scale below.
Tests/Projects 40%
Quizzes 30%
Alternative Assessments* 20%
Homework 10%

*Alternative assessments include but are not limited to class participation, material checks, classwork,
homework quizzes, exit slips, and mathematical practice assessments.

The final yearly grade for this course will be computed as an average of the four marking period grades.

CLASS PROCEDURES/POLICIES:

ENTERING THE CLASSROOM:
Every instant provides great opportunity to learn, so we are to make the best of our time in class.
You are a young professional, and you will enter the classroom as one. You can think of our class
as a meeting, which you are expected to attend and enter before the bell rings.
o Pick up any handouts in the Pick Up Here basket on your way to your seat.
o Sit in your assigned seat. There are no exceptions to this rule.
o Have your homework on the top-left corner of your desk ready for me to check.
o Begin your Do Now silently.

EXITING THE CLASSROOM:
I, not the sound of the bell, will tell you when it is time to pack up your belongings. At no point
during this course should you line up at the door to leave. All desks and class materials must be
returned to their appropriate place before you leave the room. When I say, Have a
good/great/awesome/beautiful day, you may leave the classroom or talk with me if you have
questions.

ABSENCES: If you are absent, you are responsible for finding out what lessons/assignments you
have missed. You must:
1. Pick up the notes and assignments from the While You Were Out folder.
2. Arrange a time to meet with me to go over the topics and skills you were absent for.

GRADED/LATE ASSIGNMENTS (EXCLUDING HOMEWORK):
All work that will be handed in for a grade must be completed in pencil and contain your name, the
date of the assignment, and the class period you are in. All graded work must be handed in on time,
as points will be deducted daily from late assignments. You may not collaborate on graded work
unless I instruct you to do so.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES:
I will take any electronic device or related items that I see or hear. Electronic devices and related
items are cell phones, iPods, headphones, video game players, etc. There will be no warnings given
and there is no room for negotiation.

CLASSROOM ATTENDANCE/BATHROOM POLICY:
Your attendance in class is vital for you to succeed. Therefore, please visit the restroom, your
locker, the water fountain, etc. during the time between your classes. If you need to use the
bathroom during class, hold up your bathroom pass in the air and I will let you know whether or not
you can go to the bathroom at that time.
3
QUIET SIGNS:
If the class is doing an activity, but I need the class attention, I will use one of the following signals
to ensure you are quiet and are paying attention.
o Raise one hand and count down from five.
o Clap it quiet

At this point, you must (1) be silent and (2) track me.

SHARPENING PENCILS:
If you need to sharpen your pencil, do so at the beginning of class during the Do Now. If you need
to sharpen your pencil during class, raise your pencil in the air. I will let you know whether or not
you can do so at that time.

BLOWING YOUR NOSE:
Do it.

SPOTSWOOD POLICIES:
As a member of Spotswood High School, you must follow all school rules and policies. Lack of
adherence to these rules and policies will be dealt with in accordance with the consequences
outlined in the student handbook.

EXTRA HELP:
I want nothing more than to help you succeed in this class. I am committed to helping you meet my
high expectations of you so you can have opportunities in life. To reach success, you must ask
questions and seek help. Please schedule an appointment to meet with me before school, after
school, or even during lunch (I have lunch Period 7). Please do not hesitate to reach out to me!

I look forward to the most wonderful year with you, and am very excited to work together to ensure that (1)
you learn a lot and (2) you will have opportunities in your life.
