Unit 2 Constant Velocity 9/3/2014

1. Consider the velocity vs. time graph to the right.
a. Write a description of the motion of the object.
b. Draw the corresponding position vs. time graph. Provide numbers on both
axes.
c. How far did the object travel in the interval t =1s to 2s? From t = 1s to t =
4s?
d. What is the total displacement? Explain how you got the answer.
For problems 2 - 4, draw a picture of the situation, sketch graphs (x vs. t and v vs. t) and use appropriate
mathematical models to illustrate your calculations.
2. A racecar travels at a speed of 95 m/s. How far does it travel in 12.5 s?
3. A sailboat travels 45 km eastward at a speed of 20 km/hr. The wind then drops, and the boat has a speed of has a
speed of 15 km/hr for the next 25 km continuing due east.
a. How long did it take the boat to travel 55 km?
b. What was the average velocity for the trip?
4. Two students 3 km apart drive toward each other on a straight road (not recommended!). One travels at 20 m/s,
the other at 25 m/s.
a. How far does each car travel before they meet head-on?
b. At what time do they meet?
5. The speed of sound in air (at 0 C) is 330 m/s. The speed of light is about a million times faster. How can you
use this to knowledge to determine the distance from you to a lightning strike? Hint: Draw a picture & an x vs. t
graph for the light & sound.
For problems 6 - 7, sketch a single x vs. t graph that shows both objects (in addition to drawing a picture) and use
appropriate mathematical models to illustrate your calculations.
6. Dr. Evils twin sister steals a car and roars onto the highway at 100 km/hr heading for the boarder 300 km away.
If the cops get to the highway onramp one half hour later, what must their minimum average speed be in order to
catch her?
7. A Ford is traveling at a speed of 15 m/s and is 60 m ahead of a Chevrolet traveling in the same direction at 20
m/s.
a. Create a velocity vs. time graph of both the Chevy and the Ford on the same axes.
b. When will the Chevy catch up to the Ford?
c. How far will the Chevy travel before catching up to the Ford?
8. Two snails are traveling in opposite directions starting from the same position. One snail moves at 0.5 cm/s. It
takes 20 seconds for the snails to be 15 cm apart. What is the velocity of the other snail?
9. A person begins walking at 5 m/s starting from zero. After 10 seconds, they stop for 10 seconds. Then they
move in the same direction for 6 seconds at 3 m/s then stop.
a. What is the persons final position?
b. What is their average velocity?
10. On a Friday evening, there are 10 food trucks lined up on Chatsworth bumper to bumper from West to East.
Each truck is 6 meters long. In order, they are Annies Apples, Bobs Biscuits, Celines Crepes, Dougs
Doughnuts, Elaines Eatery, Franks Franks, Gingers Grinders, Hans Helpings, Irenes Indian & Johns Jelly.
You start at Annies West bumper, and walk toward Johns, moving at 1.3 m/s. Your friend starts at the far end
of Johns (East bumper) and moves toward you, but they are reading the menus along the way so they have a
speed of 0.8 m/s. If you and your friend agree to eat at the truck where you meet, what are you eating?
11. Write a short story with at least three time periods of different motion. The story may involve either one or
two objects and be as complex as you like. Sketch a stack of position vs. time and velocity vs. time graphs that
correspond to your story.
