Shannon Pages Class September 5, 2014

Whats Happening in Class
Our class has been busy taking several learning adventures over
the past 2 weeks. We have started our rst Unit of Inquiry,
Waiting on the Wold to Change, and the kids are doing a
wonderful job working together and learning new things.
Throughout the unit the students will be learning about the
Earths surface and how it changes. They will also be learning
about how di!erent cultures come together to make positive
contributions to the Earth. Our inquiry will have a Social
Studies and Science focus with Language Arts, Math, and
Technology weaved in. Please talk to your students daily to nd
out what they are learning about cultures and our Earth.
Class Behavior and Rewards
Together as a team, the students have been working hard to earn
positive Class Dojo points and ESLR tickets. The students have
currently earned 30 tickets. On Thursday we had a celebration
because we met our rst goal, which was to earn 20 tickets. The
students will now work towards earning 40 more tickets so that
they can earn another ESLR train car and a celebration. Our

Our class took a virtual eld trip to
Hiroshima as an introduction to our
Unit of Inquiry about our world. The
students worked in teams to analyze
ights by comparing prices, ight
times, and airlines, then they had to
calculate the cost for our whole class
to y their. They also compared hotels
and determined the cost for our class
to stay in a hotel during our virtual
eld trip to the Hiroshima Peace Park.
The students did a great job using
different math strategies such as
addition, multiplication, and data
analysis.
The students also wrote a realistic
ction narrative about their ights to
Hiroshima. They used a lot of
creativity in their stories to show the
reader what was happening and how
they felt. Students learned about
creating a plan for their writing and
how to follow this plan in order to
maintain focus during writing. We
have been working on giving Stars
and Wishes when reading other
students writing. The students learned
that they give 2 Stars (things that their
partner did well) and 1 wish
(something that can improve).
Encourage your child to share their
story with you because they have
worked really hard and have done a
fabulous job!

Ida B.
Our class has nished reading our rst read aloud book, Ida B.
The students loved reading this book and so did I. Ida B is one of
my favorite books to read to my class and I was thrilled that the
students enjoyed it too. One reason that I love to read the book
aloud to the students is because of the way that Ida B changes
throughout the story. The students learned a lot about how to
analyze how a character changes throughout the story using clues
from the story. The students were able to follow Ida B. through
many di!erent adventures and plans that were both positive and
negative. Throughout the story we created a storyboard that
shows the characters, setting, problem, solution, and major
events. Take a look at the photo below to see the amazing work
the students did of portraying the story.

Science
All about the Earth and Geology!
The students have started
learning about how our Earth
changes because of natural
process such as erosion and
weathering. We have been
discussing what our Earth is made
of and the landforms that make
up the surface of the Earth.
Encourage your child to research
landforms, weathering, and
erosion so that they can share
more information with the class.
Math
The students have been learning
all about Geometry. Our focus so
far has been lines, line segments,
rays, and angles. They took their
rst quiz today and did a
wonderful job! We will continue
working through our Geometry
Unit over the next few weeks.
We have also started using an
online math program called
TenMarks. Your student has a
login and can use the site
$www.tenmarks.com% at home to
complete tasks and assignments.
