She made sure to explain everything in a way that we could understand. 1. powerpoints 2. Just the professor being excited to teach and the course was very interesting 3. The simplicity of it. She understood that not many of us were biology majors and kept it simple. The class was full of options and was always fun. 4. Made it easy to understand for non-science people. 5. Having the content simplified and condensed to include only the most important information was really helpful. 6. notes and the teacher always made herself available foe extra help 7. .... 8. The class interaction and the power point presentations were useful 9. Everything 10. I liked your enthusiasm and excitement about the topics you were covering. You were very knowledgable and responsive to questions that the class had. 11. na 12. Dr. Polando was a stellar. I really appreciated the simplification of difficult concepts as well as her energy. 13. Manchester University Course Evaluation Reports https://gateway.manchester.edu/_layouts/course_evaluation_reports/... 2 of 9 5/12/14, 12:05 PM Polando shows up to every class with high enthusiasm and you can tell she is passionate about teaching. 14. Profesor Polando is an excellent teacher. She knows how to make the material straight forward, but also challenging. I have hated biology throughout my entire scholastic career, but this class has changed my view on the subject. This was without a doubt because of the way Dr. Polando taught this course. I learned more from this one biology class than I have learned in any science class that I have ever taken. She knows how to reach every student through her teaching approach. This is a priceless quality to have as a teacher. She is always readily available to any student that needed her help. She is a fantastic professor! 15. Teaching us what was actually necessary for the course and not making us learn a bunch of useless material that doesn't reinforce the overall goal of the course. 16. i really liked how excited dr. polando was! 17. Having the power points on D2L were wonderful because I was never able to keep up with Dr. Polando in class as she was lecturing, so having those available and being able to go back later and copy them down helped me study and the material to sink in more. Also the review days she provided for the tests were very helpful! I hate it when we learn new material the day before an exam but with this class that wasn't a problem. 18. It was very personalable. The information was intersting, and informative. 19. We were able to learn about human biology in a way which all students, even non-science majors could understand. This was a particularly effective trait of the class because all students were able to understand the material. The professor also was extremely good about being able to accommodate to student's schedules, understanding that students are busy and don't have tons of extra time to dedicate to a core class. 20. tests always came from power points so we knew what to study 21. The fact that she would joke around with the topic made it fun and made it 'stick.' 22. Clearly telling us what we had to know for exams. Since none of us are Biology majors, it was extremely helpful that Dr. P was able to take the time to help all of us understand the material. 23. Dr. P made the class interesting and fun. There was never a dull moment!:) 24. The use of power points 25. Dr. Polando had very realistic expectations and made learning biology enjoyable! 26. Lectures 27. What changes could be made to improve the teaching or the content of this course? The book is not useful at all. 1. Less essays 2. Nothing 3. NOTHING 4. Nothing! 5. No suggestions. 6. none 7. Have a book that is easier to read. 8. No changes I enjoyed this course. 9. Nothing 10. To improve the teaching of this course, I would limit the amount of papers and maybe make one or two papers that are more extensive. 11. na 12. I would not make any changes to this course. 13. I can't think of anything. 14. N/A 15. N/a 16. 17. I think more in class activities would be good. Like we did the bacteria thing and we did the bones day and the marshmallow and gummy bears thing...more things like that would make the content more engaging! 18. Dr. Polando could be a bit tougher when it comes to classroom management. Other than that she is a wonderful 19. Manchester University Course Evaluation Reports https://gateway.manchester.edu/_layouts/course_evaluation_reports/... 3 of 9 5/12/14, 12:05 PM instructor The professor could slow down during lecture to explain topics more thoroughly. 20. I enjoyed the class. I would not change it. 21. None. Except the two guys in the back on the right who were complete dickheads and did nothing but talk constantly. You should probably make people like that be quiet and stuff. Told me that hamburger can be grown but that McDonalds isn't organic. 22. Maybe not draw the presentations at the end. While it was a chance to present, I would have learned more from your lectures. 23. Nothing. 24. I do not believe there should be any changes. 25. None! :) 26. Nothing 27. Her own knowledge of topics and use of examples is very stimulating. 1. Powerpoints being available to us, lectures, interactive learning environment, journal clubs. Dr. P is a great professor/ advisor. She is a understanding kind professor but her classes are still challenging and I learn alot from this. I usually have a better time remembering the information in this class because she drills it in our heads and makes it interesting. Love Dr. P favorite professor 2. Lots of diagrams helped tremendously 3. I enjoyed the class and loved the section on cancer and autoimmunity. 4. The information given on the powerpoints was effective at teaching the content of this course. Dr. Polando's enthusiasm for the subject also made it a more enjoyable learning environment versus learning to cram information onto a test. 5. I liked that after learning the basics of immunology we could choose different topics to learn about such as cancer or autoimmunity. 6. Nothing beats a Dr. Polando course. She can make any lecture interesting. She is always enthusiastic. She understands us as students and helps us in and out of class. She also makes sure to always have current information. 7. I liked knowing how to study for the exams: looking at the slide shows. I liked the "quizzes" or homework we 8. Manchester University Course Evaluation Reports https://gateway.manchester.edu/_layouts/course_evaluation_reports/... 6 of 9 5/12/14, 12:05 PM had. That really helped me remember some of the more difficult parts. Not that I would want more homework, but maybe a small worksheet or homework for each chapter, or slideshow, would be helpful in knowing and remembering the major concepts. The journal club presentations before before our papers were do were helpful. Posting all the powerpoints and previous exams online worked really well for note taking and studying. The homework such as drawing complement pathway and cell differentiation were especially helpful and less stressful than weekly quizes (although those aren't a bad idea either!). The games are always fun and 3 exams was the right amount. 9. Liked the powerpoints to give a visual side to what we were learning 10. I liked the diagrams used in the powerpoints those were helpful when learning pathways 11. What changes could be made to improve the teaching or the content of this course? No change. 1. No book- I rarely used it 2. Lab!! 3. I wouldn't change the course at all. 4. If the powerpoints had more descriptions on what the figures were it would have helped when reviewing for the exams and understanding the diagrams. 5. I wish I had known we wouldn't use the book very much, or I wouldn't have bought it. 6. I wish there was a lab. I also wish Dr. Polando would make us food everyday, because everything she makes is amazing. Immunology has probably been my favorite manchester course just beating out microbio with Dr. Polando. I am very sad this is my last Dr. Polando course. 7. We didn't use the book much. It didn't have much additional information that I thought was worth having. If the slides had some more writing on them, they would be better than the book by far. 8. I think to have a quiz about halfway between exams (too keep students honest and studying) would be a helpful tool. 9. Maybe some more assignments to help with a better understanding of what we are talking about 10. No changes. 11.
