the Olympic Games is the premier sporting venue for inexperienced athletes from
around the world, they, like a mega sporting events, are also significant to the
hosting city and country.
More importantly, to the large amount of money and pressure from the global
attention, hosting the Olympic Games has ripple effects through all the layers of the
citys and countries social and economic culture.
Economists are questionnaire about the economic benefits of hosting such as the
Olympic Games or the World Cup, These activities have considerable cost and seem
to yield benefits. These doubts are rarely shared by policy-makers and the
population, who are typically quite enthusiastic about such exhibition. the Olympics
has a positive impact on national exports. This effect is statistically robust,
permanent, and large; trade is around 30% higher for countries that have hosted the
Olympics. The Olympic effect on trade is characteristic to the signal a country
sends when bidding to host the games, rather than the act of actually holding a
mega-event. A political economy model that formalizes this idea, and derives the
conditions under which a signal like this is used by countries wishing to broaden.
