Student-Generated Lesson Template

In this exercise, students will take three days working in class together in small groups to generate a two
day lesson for their own class. Student lessons will then be combined (and refined) by the instructor to
create two days of instruction that comes from the students themselves! While you are encouraged to
be creative and take ownership of this process, there are definitely some guidelines we need to follow,
and a few components that must be a part of your completed lesson. Please read and follow this
template and fill in the appropriate information.

Skills Addressed (Based on Common Core Standards)

Please describe how your group will address each of the skill sets below:

In-Class Activities
Please describe specifically what will occur in the classroom over a two-day period. Each class should
start with a do now, should include a learning target, and should end with some kind of closing
activity.

Product:
Any good lesson includes a product. This word has a specific meaning in the educational context. It
means a measurable, gradable thing that students actually create that allows the instructor to assess
their learning and understanding of target goals and areas of learning. On a separate sheet of paper
(written legibly), please describe the product you expect your peers (and yourself) to create, and
describe how it addresses analysis of informational texts, writing and speaking and listening. Be as

specific as possible when describing your product. We will discuss this in class and the instructor will be
available to help you in creating this product.
Due Dates:
Along with any product, there must of course be clear due dates that students can follow. Please list
them here:
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Rubric:
To be fair, we must be very clear how grades are assessed. Your group needs to create a rubric that
shows how your product will be graded. If you choose to use an AP-style essay as your product, we can
use the AP writing rubric. Other aspects of work will require their own rubrics. This will need to be
generated as a separate document.
Anything Missing?
This is an experimental process, never before attempted in Mr. Ayers English class in quite this way
before. We will surely identify things that are lacking and things that need to be added. Please delineate
those things here:

Reflection:
Once this project is complete, we will create a written reflection of the process. This will be done
individually, rather than in small groups. Each student will create a written reflection of three to five
paragraphs to be due next Wednesday, 09/17.
