You are advised to spend 60 minutes writing an essay on your chosen question in this booklet.
INSTRUCTIONS
Write an essay on at least ONE visual or oral text that you have studied.
The text(s) can be any of the following:
flm
television programme
radio programme
drama production
graphic novel
oral performance
If you choose to write about more than one text, the texts may be:
the same type (eg, two flms) OR
a combination of different types (intertextual studies- eg a flm and a drama production)
The texts may have the same or different authors. You may compare or contrast the texts
if you wish.
Choose ONE of questions 1-7. Make sure your chosen question suits the text(s), and that
you understand and can write about BOTH parts of the question before you start writing.
After you have chosen a question, complete the box at the top of page 3. You may use the
space on page 3 to map or plan your ideas.
QUESTIONS (Choose ONE): A list of visual and oral language features is provided on page 3.
1. Describe at least ONE important conict in the text(s).
Explain how the conict helped you to understand at least one character or individual OR events in the

Explain why the idea as shown in the text(s), is relevant to young people, supporting your points with

4. Describe at least ONE important setting in the text(s).
Explain how the setting helped to explain at least one characters actions in the text, supporting your
points with visual and / or oral language features.
Note: Setting is the time, place, and circumstances that form the background against which characters
/ individuals live and act.
5. Describe at least ONE important event that surprised you in the text(s).
Explain how the event surprised you, supporting your points with visual and / or oral language features.
6. Describe at least ONE important lesson learned by a character or individual in the text(s).
Explain why the lesson was important for the character or individual to learn, supporting your points
with visual and / or oral language features.
7. Describe at least ONE important contrast in the text(s).
Explain how the contrast helped you to understand at least one key idea in the text(s), supporting your
points with visual and / or oral language features.
