Objective: To understand map numbering system and to study various details on topographic map(s)
Procedure: 1. Understand the concept of map numbering using the sheets provided. 2. From the map number sheet, determine the map numbers for Lucknow, Kanpur and Delhi at all scales. 3. Take note of the map numbering procedure and write in report. 4. The topographical sheets are also referred to by the arc length in (degrees or minutes) that a sheet covers. Determine by what names the 1:1M, 1:250K, 1:50K sheets are referred accordingly. 5. Find the Plotting Accuracy. 6. Record the Latitude/Longitude/and Height for the following i) IIT GATE ii) Rotary near the SAC building iii) GI Lab iv) At any place of Importance (write the name of the place) in Lucknow, Kanpur and Delhi
Study the given topographic sheet at 1: 50,000 scale to report the following: 7. Make an A4 size format showing how (and where in the sheet i.e. location) details are shown, e.g. the RF and graphical scale are shown at middle bottom (Layout of the map). 8. Understand map symbols and record symbols and colors for the following: i) Tree: surveyed and unsurveyed ii) Contours iii) Forest area iv) River/canal v) Railway line/single, double vi) Roads (metallic, non-metallic (Kuchha) road) vii) Telephone line viii) Electrical line ix) Urban areas/buildings
9. Locate the following in map: Surveyed tree, triangulated station for height (Bench Mark, BM), and triangulation control point. Write the approximate longitude and latitude of these features in the report.
