Study Questions for Exam 1: Osland and Turner textbook and additional readings

The first exam will cover the text and material discussed in class from the first three sessions.
The exam will be composed of true/false, multiple choice, and a few essay questions. You will
have 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete the exam.

The following questions are to help you focus on the main points in our sessions and the articles
from our text.

1. What are the benefits of social capital and networking? What is the importance of helping
others according to Grant?
2. According to Ancona et al., describe the four capabilities that make up their framework of
distributed leadership.
3. What is the purpose of the Reflected Best Self (Roberts et al) exercise? Why do the authors
believe this will work?
4. According to Berg et al. what is job crafting and why does it matter?
5. What are Cialdinis six social psychological principles that help bring about behavior change,
i.e., compliance with a request?
6. Be able to identify effective negotiating strategies according to Graham, and understand why
they are effective.
7. What is emotional intelligence (EI) and why does Grant refer to a dark side of this? When
does Grant say EI is most consequential?
8. What is Rousseaus psychological contract? What are the sources of contract violations?
What are the likely responses to violation?
9. According to Thomas and Osland, what is mindful communication? What factors interfere
with our abilities to communicate with those from another culture? What skills can we develop
to help improve our cross-cultural communication?
10. According to Hammond et al., what are the biggest decision-making biases?
11. According to Osland & Bird, what do we know about perception? When are stereotypes
helpful? What are sources of misinterpretation in cross-cultural interactions? How can we get
their meaning?
12. Be able to describe the different generations according to Hankin. Why do the generations
differ, and how might this impact behavior in the workplace?
Also know the conflict handling styles we discussed in class and there will be one Martha
Rinaldi question on what we learned from the case.
