With the start of the Cavan

Public Participation
Network we must now say
farewell to Cavan
Community Forum. I would
just like to take this chance
to thank all the volunteers and community
leaders who participated in The Forum
and made it a wonderful, interesting,
energetic and inspiring group to work
with.
We will now embark on a new journey
with new structures, plans and
personalities and build a community rich
Cavan with the Public Participation
Network on the sturdy work of The
Forum. Thank you all past members of
The Forum and welcome to all new
members of Cavan Public Participation
Network.
Daniel Downey,
Community Development Coordintor.

Following on from the highly successful
Peace Roadshows run in 2013 we are
currently delivering a triple series of
workshops. If the Roadshows were to
identify community issues and needs, these
Workshops are to find the solutions. The 1st
Workshop engaged youth groups and youth
in urban areas to answer some of their needs,
the 2nd discussed finding solutions to more
general needs for Tidy Towns and
Development Groups.
On September 23rd in the Cavan Crystal
Hotel we will be holding our final Workshop
on community investment
Community Peace Workshop III

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
The Cavan Public Participation Network (CPPN)
has been formed after 3 regional and 3 sectoral
elections over the summer. The Secretariat forms
the largest non-political democratic voice in
Ireland and CPPN is the local vehicle for
community empowerment and representation.
This is a great opportunity for community groups
to send members to have their voice heard,
receive extra training and get to know other
groups in the county to work closer in
partnership as a family of community groups
across County Cavan. See next page for more.

The shape of civic and community engagement in Ireland is changing
and County Cavan along with it. A new Public Participation Network
has been established and here we have the shape and faces of this new
way to give YOUR community a voice where it counts.

What Is A PPN? A Public Participation Network is a way citizens can
engage in the decision making of the country through non-political
means.

Why Have A PPN? In most other countries local government is
entirely political and local authorities have most of the say over
services and other local decisions but in Ireland we have established
these bodies to ensure a grass roots community voice at the decision
making tables.

Winner o. the All Ireland Art Competition
Special congratulations to Olive Payne
who won the All Ireland Amateur Art
Competition, sponsored by Fleetwood Ireland
and awarded her prize by Heather Humphreys,
Arts Minister.
She won the competition at
this years Virginia
Agricultural Show, yet another community
activity for people to engage in at this brilliant
event. Well done Olive, from all at Cavan Public
Participation Network!

Cavan Town Mens Shed
launched a Cot Boat this
summer with their partner
group from Northern Ireland,
SEFF (The South East
Fermanagh Foundation). The
project brought the men
together brilliantly and helped
upskill them as individuals and
as a team.
Another great community
project reaching across the
border from Cavan Peace
Partnership.
Each year the Anne Tully Perpetual Award is given to a community
group who demonstrate the volunteerism, community spirit and sense
of giving which were the hallmarks of Anne Tully, one of Cavans
most active volunteers. This year was judged by TD Joe OReilly and
Community Development Coordinator Daniel Downey. Here were
just some of the contenders at their display tables...

Late August witnessed the spectacular Virginia Agricultural Show,
Cavans top rural showcase and a demonstration to the nation of the
prime quality events, produce, community and energy of our county. Our
CPPN member, Kathleen Duffy is one of the organisers and we commend
her and all her fellows for bringing together a great event for Cavan!
