Tutorial problems

Problem1. What amount of heat would be required to produce 4.4 kg of steam at a pressure
of 6 bar and temperature of 250
O
C from water at 30
O
C? Take specific heat of superheated
steam as 2.2 kJ/Kg K.

Problem 2. The following observations were made during the trial of a boiler plant
consisting of a battery of 6 Lancashire boilers and an economiser :
Calorific value of coal/kg = 29915 kJ
Mass of feed water per kg of dry coal = 9.1 kg
Equivalent evaporation from and at 100

C per kg of dry coal = 9.6 kg
Temperature of feed water to economiser = 12

C
Temperature of feed water to boiler = 105

C
Air temperature = 13

C
Temperature of flue gases entering to economiser = 370

C
Mass of flue gases entering to economiser = 18.2 kg/kg of coal
Mean specific heat of flue gases = 1.046 kJ/kg

C
Find:
(i) The efficiency of the boiler alone.
(ii) The efficiency of the economiser alone.
(iii) The efficiency of the whole boiler plant.

Problem 3. The steam used by the turbine is 5.4 Kg/kWh at a pressure of 50 bar and a temperature
of 350
O
C. The efficiency of boiler is 82 % with feed water at 150
O
C.

Problem 4. What should be the height of chimney if a static draught of 20mm of water is to be
produced? The mean flue gas temperature in the chimney is 270
O
C and the temperature of
atmospheric air is 20
O
C. The barometer reads 760mm of hg. The gas constant for air is 287 and
for the chimney gas is 255 J/kg-K.
