Building Math Skills at Home

Automaticity of addition/subtraction and
multiplication facts is crucial. Students are required to
practice these facts for 10 minutes per night and to record
their practice in their math log. Math and Reading Logs
are due on Friday. Make it fun, use iPhone apps, tablets,
computer games! All students have a Reflex Math
account. This is a fantastic program to help strengthen
math skills.

In reading, the students will be participating in daily
activities to build and strengthen their comprehension and
analytical skills. These activities include:

Guided reading groups small group instruction where
students are grouped according to their reading level

Whole-group reading a text that is read and discussed
as a whole class

Independent reading students read books that they
select on their own

Reading at Home


Students are asked to read 100 minutes per week at
home. My goal is to develop life-long readers. I want
them to LOVE reading and not view it as a chore. At
home, students may read anything they wish. Book slips
are no longer required; however, students are required
to fill in their reading log and return it on Friday.

We will continue to explore writing different text
types including opinion, informative/explanatory, and
narrative pieces. We will also complete several research-
based projects.

As part of our daily writing, students will respond to
literature and write entries in their dialogue journals.
Writing is embedded throughout our day, across all
content areas.

Homework Agendas

Students must have their agendas everyday.
Students are responsible for filling in their agendas at the
end of the school day. All homework and important
reminders will be written in their agendas. I may also jot
down a quick note.
Homework assignments consist of managing their
100 minutes of reading, nightly review of math facts,
spelling homework, and a math skills/concept assignment.
Nightly homework should not take more than 45 minutes.
Coventrys homework policy can be found in the
student handbook.

The grading system is as follows:
4 Exceeds 101+
3 Proficient 85-100
2 Approaching 70-84
1 -- Needs Improvement 69 or lower

Students will have the opportunity to fix and return
select in-class assignments. They may take time during
recess to make corrections.

As part of our school-wide Positive Behavioral
Interventions and Support program (PBIS), students may
earn Brave Bucks when following the expected
behaviors of our classroom and school. Every afternoon
I choose a Brave Buck winner to select a small treat
from the Treasure Chest. All Brave Bucks are tallied and
children may earn school-wide incentives. A special
school raffle will take place on Brave Thursdays as an
additional incentive.

Home/ School Compact

The Home /School Compact outlines clear
expectations in regards to homework and the school-
wide, behavior expectations of being a BRAVE student.
