DSG Multicultural Affairs & Outreach Agenda 2014-2015

Overall Vision:
The purpose of the Director of Multicultural Affairs & Outreach is two-fold: to facilitate and
foster interaction between DSG and multicultural entities on Dukes campus, and to provide
DSG and Duke Administration a comprehensive understanding of the issues facing multicultural
groups on campus.

Encouraging Collaborations between Multicultural Groups/Centers

Streamlining communications
Create a calendar that includes all groups identified through UCAE as primarily
cultural organizations to assist in promoting events focusing on diversity issues or
pertaining to minorities on campus
o Add to weekly DSG blasts, CMA digest

Promoting Diversity through Collaborations
I will actively participate in planning creative outreach events that promote diversity and
furthermore promote DSGs stance on a diverse campus. I will reach out to Directors, campus
group leaders, and councils that participate in/focus on creating an inclusive campus. This is
purposely broad in order to include events that are proposed throughout the course of the year.
Work with PACT training facilitators and CRRs diversity training to figure out how at
least one representative from organizations that have events including alcohol can be
required to participate in order to host alcohol events

Providing DSG/Administration an Understanding of Campus Climate

CMA: Unity Through Diversity
A creative week-long series on diversity issues facing Dukes student body, Unity Through
Diversity originally featured a written component submitted by multicultural groups on campus.
This written commentary on Dukes cultural climate served as a thorough resource to cultural
centers, administrators, and faculty on what issues and changes students who view the campus
through a multicultural lens prioritize. I will:
Work with CMAs Facilitators Acting for Change and Equality to reintroduce this
component to Unity through Diversity
Work with cultural group student leaders to reiterate the importance of this cultural report
in laying groundwork for future proposals to DSG
Conduct a small scale version of this report this year to allow the idea to re-enter
priorities of student groups

Cultural Groups and SOFC Communication Gaps
Investigate SOFC structure to determine how cultural groups are advocated for during
funding meetings
