Characteristics of

Life.
Objective
To learn about living and non-living
things.
To distinguish between living, non-
living, reviving and dead.
To investigate about living things.
Developing curiosity and critical
thinking about the topic.

Write on left side paper:

Why do seeds seem to be non-living?
How can we show that they are living?
In your folders, draw the following
table:

Now look around our classroom and

write in at least two things in your

table for each category.

Lets Practice
Tell if the object is living or nonliving.

1) ALL LIVING THINGS ARE MADE
OF CELLS

A CELL IS THE SMALLEST LI VI NG UNI T
THAT CAN CARRY OUT LIFE PROCESSES.
Single celled (unicellular )
organisms makeup most
organisms on Earth.
They have everything they need to be self-sufficient.
In multi-cellular organisms, the cells
specialize to perform specific functions (bone
cells, skin cells, muscle cells, root cells,
leaf cells).
Nerve cell Leaf cell
Red Blood Cell
Yeast cell
2) ALL LIVING THINGS
GROW AND DEVELOP
To grow means to get bigger and to get
bigger; more cells must be added.
To increase numbers of cells, cell
division must occur.
Develop means to change into an adult
form (mature).
3) ALL LIVING THINGS
REPRODUCE TO FORM
MORE OF THE SAME KIND
OF ORGANISM

4) ALL LIVING THINGS
RESPOND TO A STIMULUS
(plural-Stimuli)
Living things respond to immediate and
long-term changes in their environment
(shiver when cold, change fur color, plants
bend toward light).
Responding to Stimuli
a. dogs pant when hot
b. pupils dilate in lower light levels
c. humans sweat when body gets too
hot
d. reflexes touch hot stove, fight/flight
e. Sunflower responds to sunlight.
The Needs of Living Things
1) ALL LIVING THINGS NEED
NUTRIENTS AND ENERGY
The SUN is the main source of energy on
Earth!!!
The Sun makes light that is used by plants!!!!!!
What is the name of this process by which
plants convert the energy from the sun into
food?
Plants (producers) trap the energy of the
Sun and make glucose (sugar) in the
process called photosynthesis.
Consumers (animals) get their energy from the
plants!!!!
2. LIVING THINGS NEED WATER

- Our bodies are made of almost 70% water.

-Water is the main ingredient of cells of all
living things.
-Water is used transport stuff through living
things.
- Water is necessary to carry out chemical
changes in living things.
-

3. LIVING THINGS NEED AIR

-All living things need air to live.

-Organisms living on land get oxygen from
the air.

-Organisms living in water either use
dissolved oxygen from the water, or come
to the waters surface to get oxygen from
the air.

4. LIVING THINGS NEED A HABITAT,
OR A PLACE TO LIVE
-All organisms must have a place to live.

-Some larger organisms, such as an elephant,
require a lot of space.

-Smaller organisms, such as bacteria, may
spend their whole lives on a single pore on
the tip of your nose.

LIVING THINGS ARE DIVERSE
1. Living things come in all sizes.

2. Magnifying tools, such as microscopes helps
to identify microorganisms.

3. Organisms get their food in different ways.

4. Organisms move in different ways.
