Course Overview
8his course provides students <ith an introduction to the many aspects of school
li/rarianship1 Speci4c topics include moving from the traditional classroom to the
school li/rary= e;uita/le access to information= /asic information literacy s>ills for
school li/rarians= an introduction to collection development= an overvie< of school
li/rary standards and developing a professional learning net<or>1
Course Design
C6I 4+4 uses the Illinois State "oard of Education .i/rary Information Specialist
Standards as a frame<or> for the course1 C6I 4+4 is meant to help smooth the
transition from the traditional classroom to the school li/rary5 and to provide the /asic
>no<ledge5 s>ills and voca/ulary students <ill need to /e successful in their future
li/rary science course<or>1 8he course /egins /y investigating the day(to(day
activities of a school li/rarian and comparing them to those of a classroom teacher1
Students <ill /ecome familiar <ith the fundamental li/rary concepts of e;uita/le
access to information and patron privacy1 8he course <ill then proceed to a history of
li/raries and their mission and role in education and learning1 Central school li/rary
topics such as learning standards5 colla/oration5 collection development and
technology <ill /e introduced5 providing students <ith a foundational >no<ledge for
additional course<or>1 3inally5 professional development and employment
opportunities <ill /e discussed1

Class participation is a large portion of your grade1 I do not li>e to set

credit for participation in each class5 you must participate in the audio discussion
and the chat room during each class meeting and participate in all class activities
