Our main objective this year is to prepare for the IGCSE French Foreign Language Exam, and to start working for the IGCSE French First Language Exam that you will be taking at the end of Form 5.
Main objectives of the course You will continue to consolidate your vocabulary, spelling, grammar, speaking and writing skills, whilst beginning to reflect on and analyse ideas and contemporary topics and issues in view of the IGCSE French First Language in Form 5. You will reinforce your written and spoken language, work on improving how you express yourselves and how you organise your ideas logically. You will start exploring argumentative/discursive and narrative/descriptive essays. You will be encouraged to read and analyse classical and contemporary texts/complete works and will study some in class.
Our weekly lessons will be divided in 4 areas Writing You will continue to consolidate your vocabulary, spelling, grammar through regular exercices and dictations, and identification and recognition of most common mistakes (group work). You will study and develop different styles of expression through the analysis of various written documents. You will improve your written expression by studying a variety of texts and articles. General comprehension questions will lead on reflection tasks (critical thinking) and argumentative pieces of writing. In some cases, you will work on developing your creativity. You will work on acquiring the tools (connectors, expressions, organisation of ideas, etc) allowing you to develop clear and constructed ananlytical skills. We will devote one to two lessons per week to the practise and reinforcement of writing sklills as specified above.
Reading You will study a variety of complete works in class throughout the year (please refer to list handed out) and be also encouraged to read more independently (you will find some reading suggestions on the list youve been given). The aim of this is to help you discover different styles and literary periods, and develop literary analysis. We will devote one lesson per week to the study of complete works.
Speaking You will practise your speaking skills in your every day lessons, but you will also be assigned presentations on specific topics to hold in front of the class. You will need to focus on clarity, organisation and accuracy, whilst keeping them interactive. You will be given a timetable with dates and topics to prepare for.
IGCSE French Foreign Language Preparation for this examination will take place continuously, with paper-based activities/exercises to cover the 4 skills and papers you will take (listening, reading, speaking and writing). We will devote one to two lessons per week to the practise of IGCSE papers.
