Introduction

To introduce the student to the basics of Veterinary Technology. The student will explore career
opportunities in the field of veterinary science and become aware of requirements needed for the
profession. This course will cover recognized breeds in domestic and small exotic animals. Normal
behavior and common behavioral problems with each species will be explored. The student will learn
the medical terminology associated with veterinary medicine.

Front Office
The student will become familiar with common practices and protocol utilized in the front office of a
veterinary hospital. This includes the ability to communicate and handle various situations that may
occur in a clinic setting. The student will understand the laws governing veterinary medicine and how to
conduct themselves in a professional manner. The ability to manage and complete financial and
patient/client records will be discussed.

Veterinary Science I
The student will perform various clinical restraint techniques on large animal, small animal, and exotic
animals. This includes restraint for performing physical examinations and collecting laboratory
specimens. The student will know the normal vital ranges for the common domestic animals. Proper
nutrition and husbandry requirements will be discussed in class with the student able to provide client
education on the appropriate care for their pet.

Veterinary Science II
The student will recognize and understand the common diseases that occur in the domestic and exotic
animals. This includes the understanding of immunology and preventative medicine. The student will
assist with the implementation of preventative care in the domestic and exotic animals. Each organ
system will be discussed with the student being competent to recognize the differences between
species. The student will implement basic wound care and apply simple bandage techniques.

Veterinary Science III
The student will implement proper sterile technique protocols in the surgical suite and assist the
veterinary health care team. This includes assisting with the preparation of the patient, preparing
surgical packs, and preparing the health care team for each surgical procedure. The student will assist
the veterinary health care team with pre and post-op care of the surgical patient. Common suture
patterns, suture materials, and surgical instruments will be discussed with the student identifying each
one and distinguishing their function.
The student will recognize general groups of drugs and demonstrate proper terminology.
Pharmaceutical laws will be discussed with the student differentiating the legal issues concerning
controlled substances and prescription drugs. Proper protocol will be followed to fill, label and perform
inventory on pharmaceuticals. The student will implement safety measures and assist the veterinary
health care team in obtaining radiographic or ultrasonic images. Appropriate processing of diagnostic
images will be followed by the student under the direction of a veterinarian or veterinary technician.

Veterinary Science IV
The student will assist with the collection of appropriate samples needed for laboratory tests. Proper
protocol will be followed in the storage and set up of each sample. Appropriate record keeping will be
used when filling out and filing the laboratory results. The student will assist the veterinary health care
team with the diagnostic identification of each sample.
