CONSTITUTION

SCIENCE HONOR SOCIETY

CLUB DESCRIPTION

The Science Honors Society (SHS) is an Agoura High School science-tutoring program.
Its mission is to help promote an appreciation for the sciences and academic excellence in
this pursuit. It was founded in May of 2013 by Lucinda Laurence, Iliana Zisman and
Charlotte Laurence.

ARTICLE I Purpose

Section 1. This society shall educate any student who wishes to expand their scientic
knowledge, and it shall not deny help to any student.

Section 2. Those who wish to tutor shall develop the skills to teach and work well with
their peers.

ARTICLE II Afliation with the AHS Science Department

Section 1. This society shall run all future ideas by the Science Department.

Section 2. The Science Department may make any changes, to and regarding, SHS.

Section 3. Members of SHS shall obey the Science Departments orders.

ARTICLE III Members Requirements

Section 1. Members must receive at least a B- in each semester of their most recently
completed AHS Honors/AP/IB science course (or course in which they wish to tutor), or
at least an A- in their most recently completed semester of a College Preparatory
course (or course in which they wish to tutor). Qualied applicants will be accepted.

Section 2. All members must sign and adhere to a contract stating that:

A. They must tutor a minimum of once a week to secure membership.
B. They will respect the tutoring classroom, advisors, ofcers, and their fellow
tutors at all times. Failure to do so will result in immediate suspension from SHS.

Section 3. The SHS Ofcers may accept applicants at the beginning of Second Semester
to replace those whose applications have been revoked.

ARTICLE IV Tutoring Sessions

Section 1. Tutoring sessions will be held Monday through Friday during Support in rooms
B4for physical sciencesand in N7for life sciences.

ARTICLE V Community Service

Section 1. Each member will be provided with a community service form, which will
remain in a binder in rooms B4 and N7.

Section 2. Each member shall write an entry into their community service form after
tutoring.

Section 3. An ofcer must initial that the tutor has actually tutored during the session for
the community service hours to be valid.

Section 4. Members will be presented with their community service log(s) at the end of
the year. If a members acceptance has been revoked, they may be given their log at the
time of suspension.

Section 5. Each tutor must transfer the information from his or her log to the approved
LVUSD Community Service Learning Log, which will be approved by an advisor.

ARTICLE VI Ofcers

Section 1. The founding ofcers will remain in their position until they graduate. The
founding ofcers and advisors will unanimously decide upon the rst year Junior and
Sophomore ofcers. Junior and Sophomore ofcers & any ofcer that is not a founding
ofcer must be elected each year. An ofcer may only be relieved from their duties if the
other ofcers unanimously vote in favor of this. In this case, an election will take place to
select a new ofcer from the SHS tutors.

Section 1. President(s) shall do the following:

A. Plan and run club meetings
B. Be held responsible for each tutors community service hours
C. Regulate the SHS Facebook page
D. Communicate with SHS tutors through Remind101 and email
E. Create and regulate the SHS website
F. Ensure that an ofcer is in B4 and N6 each tutoring day
G. Make sure that each tutor signs in
H. Produce a list of all members contact information
I. Design an SHS t-shirt

Section 2. Vice President shall do the following:

A. Conduct Ofcer elections
B. Plan the SHSs dance for the Academic Pep Rally
C. Substitute for the president, if a president is absent
D. Regulate the SHS Facebook page
E. Make sure that each tutor signs in

Section 3. Secretary shall do the following:

A. Post all tutor information on the SHS Facebook page
B. Ensure that every tutor receives a tutoring certicate for involvement

C. Regulate the SHS Facebook page
D. Make sure that each tutor signs in

Section 4. Treasurer shall do the following:

A. Be held responsible for all funding
- He or she shall turn in all receipts and paperwork to the AAC.
B. Design the T-shirt with the president.
C. Regulate the SHS Facebook page.
D. Make sure that each tutor signs in.

Section 5. Junior and Sophomore Ofcers (Not founding ofcers)

A. Learn how to operate SHS
B. Attend and work at all events
C. Make sure that each tutor signs in
D. Help deliver t-shirts and other products to students and teachers
E. Run ofcer elections for the ensuing years.

ARTICLE VII Advisor

Section 1. The SHS advisors are Ms. Cathy Prater, Mrs. Katherine Blaiwes, and Ms. Naomi
Elman, Ms. Cathy Prater & Ms. Naomi Elman shall regulate room B4, and Mrs. Katherine
Blaiwes shall regulate room N7.

Section 2. An advisor must approve all SHS announcements, forms, yers, posters,
fundraisers, and any other activity.

Section 3. The advisors must store the sign-in sheets in their room.

ARTICLE VIII Fundraisers

Section 1. Two thirds of the ofcers and commissioners, in addition to the Science
Department, must consent to a fundraiser before it may be implemented.

Section 2. A company may sponsor a fundraiser.
A. The company must be approved by the science department.
B. SHS will name their event after the sponsoring company.

Section 3. All money gained from the fundraiser shall go towards SHS and the Agoura
High School Science Department.

ARTICLE IX Application Process

Section 1. An application process shall be conducted at the beginning of the school year.
Informational meetings will be held to explain the process.

Section 3. Application forms shall be distributed to the counseling ofce and all science
teachers. Additionally, ofcers shall carry application forms.

Section 4. Students shall return a completed application forms to an ofcer or advisor by
the specied date. No late applications will be accepted.

Section 6. Applicants with the a B both semesters in an AP/Honors/IB or an A in a
both semesters of their most recent College Preparatory class (or the subject in which
they wish to tutor) shall be accepted.

Section 7: Each accepted member must pay $2 in order to fund both our yearly fee to the
National Science Honor Society and t-shirts for science teachers.

ARTICLE X Afliation With The Science National Honors Society

Section 1. Agoura High School is a chapter of the Science National Honors Society.

Section 2. Members of SHS with certain qualications may become members of the
Science National Honors Society.

Section 3. Membership for a student in the SNHS is conferred during the last two years of
secondary school education. A student must have and maintain a 3.0 grade point average
(4.0 scale) to be a member. In addition, the following qualications must be met and
maintained:
A. A member must be enrolled in at least one honors or upper level science class
during or prior to the eleventh grade year.
B. A member must be enrolled in at least one second year honors or upper level
science class during or prior to the twelfth grade year.
C. If second year honors or upper level science courses are not offered by the
school, then the student must be enrolled in a second rst year honors or upper
level science class during or prior to the twelfth grade year.
D. A member must maintain a B+ average (3.5 on a 4.0 scale) across all science
courses.

ARTICLE XI Finances

Section 1. The treasurer shall be responsible for all things relating to SHS funding.

Section 2. The SHS account number shall be 345.

Section 3. All SHS-related checks must be made out to Agoura High School.

ARTICLE XII By-Laws

Section 1. All bylaws must be established by a majority of club membership.
