Communication is the management of messages with the objective of creating meaning.
We give messages verbally through our words and non-verbally through our facial expressions, stance and gestures. Communication can be: Linear or a one-way process such as a memo or this slideshow. Transactional such as conversations, meetings and other interactions.
Being aware of our non-verbal cues View the attached link for some examples of the non-verbal cues we express. http://padlet.com/reeves_l1/gyy6aw0a7xoi
Tips for effective listening Have a listening goal Eliminate distractions Talk less Avoid pre-judgments Avoid interruptions Focus on the content of the spoken message Focus on the context of the message (how it is said)
Tips for effectively responding Use minimal encouragers for prompting continued sharing (hmmm, and, so, okay). Paraphrase to clarify and confirm information. Carefully reflect the messengers feelings to show understanding. Use sincere questioning to better understand the message.
It is important to consider and understand the concepts of congruency (how the verbal and non-verbal messages intersect), the individual involved, and the concreteness of the message (as opposed to ambiguous or vague).
