Objectives

The objective of this lab experiment is to study the changes in freezing point (Tf) of
cyclohexane and the relationship between molarity, mass, molar mass, Kf and freezing
point depression. The fnal step of this experiment is to determine the molecular weight
of the unknown which changed cyclohexane's initial freezing point.
Experimental Materials
1. ring stand
2. medium ring clamp
3. 800 ml beaker
4.10 inch test tube
5. test tube clamp
6. stirring rod
7.wire gauze
8. thermometer
9. digital scale
10. paper
11. goggles
12. ice bath
Experimental methods part 1
1.flled pipet with 20.ml of the solvent (cyclohexane) into large test tube and was
simultanuously closed.
2.Calculated mass of solvent (cyclohexane)
3. test tube was submerged in ice bath
4.solution was stirred consistently for a designated time
5.sample was removed, warmed and prepared for another test run
6.all every step of to this point was repeated.
7.all the date was plotted, results and averages were determined.
Experimental methods part 2
1. weighing paper was weighed and 0.25 grams of unknown solute was also weighed.
2. sample of unknown solute was transfered to solvent in test tube.
3.solution of solute + solvent was submerged in ice bath via test tube.
4.ice bath and solution were stirred consistenly for elapsed time and information and
results of temperature were recorded.
5.as the temperature dropped below freezing point, the sample was warmed and
prepared for a second run.
6. step 1 was repeated except that this time 0.126 grams of unknown was weighed.
7. all procedures from 2-6 are repeated and information was recorded
8.all materials were removed and disposed of.
Discussion
For this experiment the expected result was that the unknown solute would lower the
freezing point of the solvent, which in this case was cyclohexane. This was expected
because of the freezing point depression material covered in class explained this
phenomenon. How much is lowered depends on the solvent, in this case it depends on
our unknown.
conclusion
After all the calculations and test runs it was determined that the unknown solute was A.
This was found to be true because
