Welcome Back Veazie Families!

I hope youve all had a wonderful summer
and are ready for a great year of reading
and learning! We have some very exciting
things happening in our library this fall:

Students in grades K-2 will continue to
explore books and build literature
awareness and appreciation through
author and genre studies.

Students in grades 3-5 will be creating
portfolios to track their library learn-
ing this year. We are focusing on build-
ing computer skills and becoming more
independent learners and users of ide-
as and information.

Look for more details about what your
student will be learning this quarter on
the flip side of this paper.

Please contact me with any questions or
comments!

Kindergarten
Welcome to the library! We are learning
what the library is all about this quarter. We
are learning how to find a book, care for it,
and bring it back. We are learning how to be
good listeners in the library while reading
fun stories about libraries.

1
st
Grade
This quarter we are doing an author study of
husband and wife duo Don and Audrey Wood.
We are comparing and contrasting their
writing and illustration styles and using the
story apron and manipulatives. They have a
fun website: www.audreywood.com

We are also brushing up on the roles of the
author and illustrator and the parts of a
book.

2nd Grade
We are starting the year with a read aloud!
We are reading the 2014 Newbery Medal
winner Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated
Adventures by Kate DiCamillo. I am very ex-
cited to share this delightful book with our
2nd graders!

We are also brushing up on identifying fic-
tion and non-fiction books.
What Were Doing This Quarter:

3rd-5th Grades
This year students in grades 3-5 are using
portfolios in the library. Each week students
will work on the computer to complete as-
signments for their portfolios. Assignments
will involve using the internet for research,
learning to use Microsoft Word, building
typing skills, and learning about digital citi-
zenship. Using computers in library each
week will help our students build needed
computer skills which will prepare them for
middle school and beyond.

Each quarter a sheet will be sent home with
report cards for parents to sign and return.
This sheet will detail your childs library
grade, (including comments) and must be
signed and returned. This sheet will also let
you know if your student has returned li-
brary books late or if there have been any
other issues you should know about.

Students will have the opportunity to check-
out books each time they visit the library.
These books are due the next time your stu-
dent visits the library. So that your student
may borrow a new book each week, please
help your student remember to bring their
book back!
