The Arlington Reads Literacy

House is a haven of learning

and self improvement for the
residents of Arlington. With
support from funding and
volunteers, our students can
work towards achieving their
personal learning goals. The
donations, both in time and
money, that allow us to
empower individuals have a
huge personal impact, not
only on students, but also on
the volunteers who work with
them.

you?
I think that I
learn a lot from
the people I work with. I am, especial-
ly with the adult learners, I am blown
away by their courage, their dedica-
tion. Right now I am working with a
62 and 64 year old with their reading
and spelling. They come to class at
night when they are tired. There was
everyone in that class (GED) from a
pregnant teen to a grandmother. They
always wanted the same thing, to bet-
ter themselves. They teach me a lot.
I s t here anyt hi ng you d l i ke
our donors to know about the
program?
I think it is crucial for Arlington Reads
to continue because education is so
very important and having been a
public school educator for 32 years, I know that we
cant reach and touch everybody. Programs like
Arlington Reads have to be there to step in so that
people can be successful, feel good about them-
selves, get better jobs, it just helps everybody all
the way around.

What goal s do you have f or yoursel f ?
My number one goal is to receive my GED and to
attend college at TCC for a couple of years and
then hopefully into a greater college so that I can
get a degree in psychology. I am going towards
the goals that will get me further towards my
dream of being a Christian counselor. After I
reach my goal of getting my GED I will get a job
and attend TCC.
How has the Li teracy House hel ped you?
I have been taking classes here for almost a year
now and it has helped me in so many ways. I love
to come to class and talk and learn with other
students who are also trying to achieve the same
thing as I am. The teachers are absolutely amaz-
ing. They take the time to teach you
new things and push you to go further
and to do your homework. That is im-
portant. To see how much they actual-
ly care about you is amazing. They
want you to be all that you want in life
and they encourage you not to give up.
What do you l i ke best about
t he Li teracy House t eachers?
I would have to say, knowing that all
of our teachers are volunteers. There
is just something about that, it makes
my heart happy. It's knowing and feel-
ing that they truly do care about their
students and they want to help us
achieve our goals. Everyday that I
come to class I get to feel like it's a
friend helping me instead of someone
just doing their job because they are
getting paid to do it.
