Discourse Community Response

Writing is a very important part of everyday life, we remember beginning to write as
children and our name being only scribbles and lines. We knew only our ABCs and most
of the time did not use our words to express that we did not want nap time. Well, now we
are all grown up and our community does not consist of day care or pre-school, our
lexicon has expanded from our simple ABCs and we have learned to state our
expressions and feelings through the words that come out of our mouths. The various
communities we are involved in now differentiate in the type of audience we are trying to
approach with our writing and or speaking skills. From a formal work environment to a
more relaxed household environment, the communities we are involved in make up the
knowledge and experiences we consist of when it comes to communication.
For example, in my work community I am required to be very respectful and formal.
When a client comes to me searching for a vehicle I do not talk to them in slang or using
inappropriate comments because that would simply be unprofessional. When I am to
email a client I must be very straight forward and simple, absolutely no confusion must
be obtained from the client and employee relationship. Communication is kept to formal
writing as any company would, one must seem professional and confident with the feel of
authority to make the client feel comfortable. I must always assure them I know how to
do my job.
It is very different in the work community as it is in the community of my family
relationships and friendships. I am more relaxed and can discuss certain personal matters
when addressing them through text, email, and social media. It is not necessarily to be
kept formal but it certainly is still kept appropriate. When discussing current events one
takes it as gossip and is not aware of punctuation errors or about sending a memo.
Simply, a text is sent, after all it is not like you are being kept track of like it is in the
work field.
When it comes to education, I must be almost as formal as if I was working at my
office. I must use certain formats like MLA or APA depending on what the professor
prefers. There is also the occasional formal email or memo sent to a professor regarding
any matter that has to do with their class. Also, notes are always required in the school
community due to class work and assessments. Although education requires appropriate
content and great grammar and punctuation, when in school I can always talk to my
fellow peers informally about subjects and topics outside of the classroom by sending a
quick text or using Facebook.
One community that I am involved with that differs extremely from all the rest is my
martial arts community. Since I hold a certain position in my competition team, my
attitude must always be strict and firm but still respectful. When I address fellow team
members I can be informal through a text or email, but when addressing coaches,
sponsors, and parents I must be formal and direct. I must have them understand that I
have respect for them but they must have respect for me. Once again never confusing the
relationship. When it comes to writing for competitions or filling out contracts I must be
very brief and simple, I cannot over explain what I am trying to say. In this community
the way I address the different types of people is what defines my image at the academy.
I must be very careful and appropriate when communicating with this certain community.
Like the different types of communities I am a part of it is the same for everyone, and
we must learn to adapt our communication and writing skills to such matters. There is a
time for everything and we must know when that time is by molding our skills into each
format required from us. No matter the community one must have the very important
skill of writing and communicating because it is what will make the statement be
expressed as they wish.
