SPECIAL PRODUCTS

Why are they called Special Products? Because they do not need any lengthy solutions to be
expressed, instead they just use only patterns.
There are different types of Special products, and patterns on how to solve them. These are-
1. Square of a Binomial
-Square of a binomial results into a Perfect Square Trinomial
Ex: (a+b)
2
=a
2
+2ab+b
2

Solve it by: Squaring the first term, Double a and b and square the last term.
Other Examples:
(4x+3)
2
= 16x
2
+24x+9
2. Difference of Two squares
-Product of Sum and Difference of two Binomials results into Difference of two squares.
Ex: (a+b) (a-b) = (a
2
-b
2
)
Solve it by: Squaring the first term and the last term, and the sign at the middle is (-)
Other examples: (4a+5b) (4a-5b)
= 16a
2-
25b
2

3. Square of a Trinomial- results into six terms
(a+b+c)
2
= a
2
+b
2
+c
2
+2ab+2ac+2bc
Solve it by: Square the first term, square the second term, Square the last term, Double a
and b, double a and c and double b and c.

4. Product of Binomials results into General Trinomial
Solve it by: FOIL Method
(a+b) (c+d) = ac+[bc+ad]+bd
Example: (x+2) (x+4) x
2
+[2x+4x]+8
=X
2
+6x+8
