The main religion in Sweden is Lutheran and other minority religions include Roman
Catholicism, the Pentecostal church, the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden, and the Greek
Orthodox Church. Many of the people celebrate major life achievements such as baptism,
confirmation, marriage, and burial with the church the majority does no attend services regularly.

Because Sweden is a mainly Christian country many of the rites of passages are the same as in
the U.S. Baptism, communion, marriage, and confirmation are among them. Also a students
progression through education is often celebrated through graduation parties.

Work in Sweden is divided equally between men and women, about 85% of work is
unionized. Sweden has high taxes but generally pays a good pension for retirement people.
Swedens standard of living has been achieved under a mixed system of high-tech capitalism and
extensive welfare benefits.

Many families in Sweden only have one or two children and it is common for unmarried couples
to live together. Their divorce rate has doubled since 1960 and men are seemed as the
breadwinners while women are mostly stay-at home workers. Over half of working women have
children that are under 16, and many tend to hold upper-level jobs.

specific details.
Modern, western-cultured clothing is worn in Sweden which includes slacks, t-shirts, and shorts.
Suits are typically worn by men and women in the place of business. Also, tuxedos and evening
gowns appear at formal events.

specific facts.
Swedes enjoy fresh fruits, vegetables, and their favorite beverages are milk, strong coffee, and
lttl. Favorite dishes include meatballs, pitty panna, Janssons frestelse, salmon, and open-faced
sandwiches. Globalization has allowed the name of the open-faced sandwich, smorgasbord, to be
used as a word for buffet in the United States.

receive in the U.S.?
School is mandatory between the ages of 7 and 16. During the first nine years, students attend a
"comprehensive school," where they study a variety of subjects. Grades one through three are
called the junior grades, four through six the middle grades, and seven through nine the senior
grades. English is taught as a second language, and in the beginning of the seventh year students
classes change based on abilities and interests.

Sweden has maintained a level of neutrality since 1814 which means they have not been
involved in wars. Sweden is also the world leader of gender equality, and is also a large
contributor in foreign aid. Inventions created in Sweden include adjustable wrench, pacemaker,
zipper, ultrasound, and HIV tracker.

Sweden has a high income and also is one of the many developed nations. Their income is aided
by timber, iron ore, and hydropower. Sweden is also a highly competitive mixed-market
economy with high taxes and a generous welfare financial.

15. How do people of this country spend their leisure time? List at least five activities. Would
you want to live there?
They spend many hours of their leisure time enjoying the outdoors. People enjoy walking,
sailing, playing soccer, and cycling. Also people enjoy seeing the summer cottages, visiting the
islands off of Stockholm, and taking winter vacations to the Mediterranean.

People in Sweden are treated equally and all people have the same rights. Men and
women are entitled to the same opportunities, rights, and obligations. Sweden also promotes
equal pay between men and women. Gay rights are also encouraged within Sweden. Although
same-sex marriage is illegal in Sweden, homosexuality was legalized in 1944. Homosexuals are
not banned from military service and Sweden also bans discrimination against gender,sexuality,
and race.
