Overview: Introduction to Engineering Design is constructed for first year engineering students; the major focus of IED is the design process and its application. Through hands-on projects, students apply engineering standards and document their work. Students use industry standard 3D modeling software to help them design solutions to solve proposed problems, document their work using an engineers notebook, and communicate solutions to peers and members of the professional community. This course is designed to challenge the way students think about simple objects and tasks around them by teaching an analytical and creative approach to problem solve, redesign, or to create their own designs. Students will be required to complete daily assignments, design challenges, complete presentations, and computer assignments through Canvas LMS, Microsoft Programs, and Autodesk Inventor. Students are expected to have successfully passed Algebra I prior to this course and after successfully completing this course will move onto PLTWs Principles of Engineering course. All PLTW Engineering students are required to take a standardized End of Course exam in May 2015 at no cost. Students successfully completing the EOC exam have the opportunity to earn college credit at select Engineering and business colleges/universities throughout the country.

The PLTW Engineering courses will focus on developing and incorporating all facets of the learner profile with an emphasis on inquirers, communicators, and risk takers.

Course Materials: Students are expected to bring their required materials to class everyday! Students who fail to bring their required materials will be considered tardy and subject to disciplinary action. Required Materials Suggested Materials 1. Engineers Notebook (provided) 2. Learning Management System (LMS-Canvas): All engineering courses with utilize the online Learning Management System (LMS) to dissemination course materials and to submit most assignments. Each student will have a laptop to use in class, but it is highly recommended the each student have a working computer with internet to access outside of school at least twice a week or more.
Course Expectations: This classroom follows 5 basic expectations: Be on Time! Be Prepared! Be Responsible! Be Considerate! Be Positive! Attendance Students are expected to be in class everyday. Current educational studies have proven that a students attendance has a direct effect on that students classroom performance and classroom behavior. If a student is absent then it is the responsibility of the student to find out what they have missed and complete assignments in a timely manner according to the OHS student handbook. - If a student misses a test, quest, or quiz they have 5 school days to make it up before school, after school, or at lunch.
Tardy Students are expected to be in their assigned seats when the bell starts. Gathering of materials, sharpening of pencils, etc. is expected to be done during passing time. This course will follow the tardy/discipline policy set forth by the Student Handbook! Homework/Grading Policy Students are expected to complete all assignments on their own and on time! All assignments subject to the following policy unless otherwise noted: 1 Day Late Loses 20% of total points 2 Days Late Loses 50% of total points 3 Days Late Automatic Zero! NO NAME ON ANY ASSIGNMENT = NO GRADE! Engineering Notebooks Students will be expected to maintain a log or journal of their experiences and designs in this course. Daily assignments and designs will be clearly assigned and graded. Grading Procedure Students caught cheating, copying, etc. will lose credit for the assignment along with possible disciplinary action in accordance to the OHS Student Handbook. 1. Class grades will be based on a formula of 25% Test/Quizzes, 40% Projects/Presentations, 25% Engineers Notebook, and 10% Homework 2. Grading Scale 100% - 90% A 89% - 80% B 79% - 70% C 69% - 60% D 59% or less F Discipline Policy Students are expected to abide by all rules/guidelines in accordance with the OHS Student Handbook. Students who violate any rule will be immediately sent to the office, a referral will be written, and a phone call will be made home to the parent/guardian. Students are at OHS to earn an education, not for a social gathering!
