Homework #1 Due 9/18/2013

1. For the following flow field: u=yz+t ; v=xz-t ; w=xy (a) Is the flow incompressible? (b) Is the flow
irrotational? (c) Find the acceleration components of a fluid particle at (1,1,1) at t=1.

2. The transient temperature distribution in a fluid is given by T=(10x+5y)(1+t), where x and y are the
horizontal and vertical coordinates in meters, T in degrees centigrade and t is time in seconds. Determine
the time rate of change of temperature of a fluid particle located at (1,1) at t=1: (a) travelling horizontally
at 1m/s passing, (b) travelling vertically at 1m/s passing, (c) travelling diagonally (at 45degree) at 1m/s
passing, (d) stationary

where x and y are the
horizontal and vertical coordinates in meters, T in degrees centigrade and t is time in seconds. The flow
velocity is given by u =x and v =y.
Determine: (i) the time rate of change of temperature of a fluid particle located at (1,1) at t=1, (ii) the time
rate of change of temperature of a thermometer located at (1,1) at t=1.

the flow is incompressible, (c) it is an ideal flow, i.e. irrotational and incompressible.
