2a How is Immigration a problem for the EU?
Immigrants are a large effect on the economy of the countries they go to. Illegal cost the
governments money because the state treasury receives less money because there are so many
people out there working and not paying taxes. Immigrants also cost governments by some
immigrants claiming benefits that cost the tax payers hundreds of millions of pounds a year.
However the Biggest controversy among economists concern the effect of immigrants on
wages. Immigrants are often willing to work more for less money making wages lower and it
harder for native people to get good paying jobs. Its for that reason that Immigrants are the
perceived reasons for the high unemployment rate in some countries.
It is often thought that immigrants are a danger to the society of where go and are
blamed for the rise in crime. Immigrants are sometimes brought in by criminal organizations.
Some work for them but Young women and children that are brought in this way are
sometimes forced to work as prostitutes for these gangs. The funds derived from this criminal
activities have been said to be a source of terrorist funding. After the world trade center attacks
the general outlook on immigration changed. People began to think that all of them were
terrorist


2b how are they dealing with this problem?
The European Union member states have called for tighter border control as a way of
stemming the flow of immigration. Different governments and experts have all come up with
different solutions. The Italian Interior Minister proposed a six month legal permit that it hoped
will stem the flow of illegal immigration and at the same time reduce the cost on the part of the
Italian government. The Minister reckons that with his proposal many immigrants will flow into
the country through the government system rather than through profiteering gangs. Germany
has given a lot of money to Poland order to stem the inflow of immigrants into Germany.
Although some of the member want to stop immigrants completely there are some that
are more welcoming. One example is The Swedish government has already stated that they will
not restrict the movement of immigrants through its borders when the new member states join
the European Union. The governments stand is based on the European Union act that allows all
members freedom of movement within member states. The Swedish government think that the
added labor coming from the eastern countries will develop the Swedish economy. It does not
plan to restrict movement but regulate it.
