Objective: The objective of this assignment is to calculate the power carrying capacity of transmission lines i.e 220KV and 500KV in Pakistan and check that if our country overcomes the entire energy crisis then its transmission structure would be able to transmit this power effectively. Transmission lines Power Carrying Capacity: According to NTDC [1], there are twelve 500KV and twenty nine 200KV transmission circuits in Pakistan. According to [2], surge impedance of each line in given below. For 500KV line: Z c =250 Ohm For 220KV line: Z c =380 Ohm SIL= power carrying capacity of single 500KV line = (500) 2 /250 = 1000 MW Power Carrying capacity of twelve 500KV circuits = 1000*12=12000 MW SIL= power carrying capacity of single 220KV line = (220) 2 /380 = 128 MW Power Carrying capacity of twenty nine 220KV circuits = 128*29=3712 MW Total Power Carrying Capacity of Transmission lines in Pakistan =12000+3712= 15712MW Current Energy Demand: From the latest survey power demand in Pakistan is more than 19000MW and our transmission lines power carrying capacity is about 15712MW. Conclusion: If our country fulfills the entire energy requirement by any means, after that its transmission system would not be able to carry this power. So before resolving the energy shortfall crisis we need to build the transmission circuits in such a way that it should be able to carry the required power i.e. more than 19000MW effectively.
