Task -2: Hands-on Activity

For Learning outcome/outcomes: The students will be able

to Identify and give functions of various types of
meristematic tissue.
Task: The learners shall perform the following activity:

Take two wide-mouth glass tumblers or bottles (eg Jam bottle). Fill them
with water. Keep an onion bulb each on the both the tumblers so that
their condensed stems are immersed in water as shown in the picture
below.

Observe the growth of roots in both the bulbs for 4-5 days. Now cut all
the roots from the bulb in tumbler A by 1 cm from the tip. Now observe
the growth of roots for another 4-5 days .

Observation Table:

4-5 days (cm) 9-10 days

Time span: 10 minutes to prepare the setup and 9-10 days to run the
experiment.

c.w. / h.w To be performed in the class , can be given as home

activity.

Resources Glass tumblers or glass bottles, onion bulb, needles to

required support the bulb (optional), water

Assessment
rubric and
its criterion

Remedial measures :

• If student does not get the desired result, appropriate reading

material should be given.

• If result is still not achieved, a buddy should be assigned to

properly guide through the experiment.
Task -3: Demonstration

For Learning outcome/outcomes: Give structural and

functional differences between vascular tissue – xylem and
phloem
Task: The teacher shall demonstrate the following activity

Materials Required: A white coloured flower of carnation, two beakers,

red and blue ink, a sharp blade and water.

Procedure:

• Fill the beakers with water.

• Add a few drops of red ink into one beaker and a few drops of blue
ink in the other beaker.

• Take a flower with a stem that is at least six inches long.

• Using a sharp blade carefully cut the stem into two halfway up
towards the flower.

• Put each stem-half into the beakers as shown in the figure below.

• You may provide additional support to the flower by putting the set-
up against the wall.
Observation Sheet:

1.What is your observation ?

2. What do you think is the reason for this observation ?

3. These are the tubular structures present in xylem :

a. Sieve tubes

b. Xylem fibers

c. Tracheids and vessels

d. Xylem parenchyma

4.Name the part of phloem with perforated walls.

a. Companion cells

b. Sieve tubes

c. Phloem parenchyma

d. Phloem fibers

5.What is the difference between structure shown by label 1. and

structure shown by label 2 ?
a. 1 helps in storage of food , 2 . helps in conduction of food

b. 1 helps in conduction of food, 2. helps in conduction of water

c. 1 helps in conduction of water, 2. helps in conduction of food

d. 1 helps in storage of water, 2. helps in conduction of water

Time span: Time to prepare the setup and about two hours after
which observation sheet can be completed by the student.

c.w. / h.w To be demonstrated in the class
