Philosophy of Teaching

I am a cognitivist. I believe that students generate knowledge and meaning
through sequential development of individuals cognitive abilities. A successful
formula for student achievement can be made possible through a combination of
developing schema and gaining knowledge through people and the environment.
Being aware of a students zone of proximal development will assist in recalling
previously acquired knowledge then integrating new knowledge. I believe by taking
a cognitivist approach to learning, students will not only develop an understanding
of the curriculum but also develop a passion to achieve further knowledge.

I believe that a students success according to the curriculum is made
possible through the process of scaffolding. By establishing an individual students
foundation of knowledge before a lesson, it becomes possible to build on the
previous knowledge step-by-step until they reach the goals set by the curriculum.

I believe creating clear learning targets allow for the most efficient
instruction. If students are directed with clarity and precision, they will achieve
their learning objectives quickly and efficiently.

I believe that an increase in formative assessment and a decrease in
summative assessment are critical in ensuring student success. Monitoring student
learning through constructive feedback can improve the learning of both teachers
and students. Series of different formative assessments must be performed before
students can be evaluated through summative assessment.

I believe that every student has the ability to succeed, and this success is
fostered by an effective teacher.
