Discourse Analysis - Summary

Introduction: Linguistic Forms and Functions

In this chapter we will talk about the function of the language, spoken and written
language, and sentence and utterance. The aim for this chapter is to obtain understanding
about discourse analysis definition, relationship, differences and the scope. Discourse
analysis is an umbrella term for all those studies within applied linguistics which focus on
units of language beyond the sentence level. Therefore, discourse refers to too wide an area
of human life, thus only discourse from the point of view of linguistics, and especially
applied linguistics. The function of the discourse contain expression of 'content' described as
Transactional view and expressing social relations and personal attitudes described as
Interactional view. Transactional view often used in the written language (text) and
interactional view often used as spoken language. Text analysis focuses on the structure of
written language, as found in such text as essays, notices, road signs and chapters. Spoken
analysis focuses on the structure of naturally spoken language as found in conversation
interviews, commentaries and speeches. It means spoken and written can be used almost
synonymously. But a distinction is always there and that in spoken has some social purpose
while written or text fulfills the function of communication of some meaning only. Sentences
and Utterance are the product of ordinary language behavior. System-sentences never occur
as the products of ordinary language-behavior. Representations of system-sentences may of
course be used in metalinguistic discussion of the structure and functions of language: and it
is such representations that are customarily cited in grammatical descriptions of particular
languages. To conclude we can say spoken or discourse and written or text have something in
common as both use the standard of language whether in sign language. Both have some
meaning that they try to convey but text has a limited scope as compare with discourse.
