The reasons why some places are special to people, and how they can be looked after (ACHGK004)
(Note: The teacher will complete a risk assessment prior to the excursion)
Evidence of learning
Class excursion to the Rockhampton Heritage Village to explore the different types of living
arrangements and schools back in the earlier years.
Resources
Resource Package Four consists of the following parts:
Excursion The Heritage Village Rockhampton, exploring the wooden cottages without
electricity, feeding animals and riding on vintage vehicles experiencing yesterdays technology
and every life for people in the 1900s.
Exploring The Heritage Village brochure and discussing why this place is special to people
around the community
Digital Camera Students use to take photos at The Heritage Village
Interactive Whiteboard
Teacher Aides to assist with supervision on the excursion

1. Teacher introduces the focus of the lesson Observations of familiar places in
the community.
The first activity is to encourage the students to participate and find interest
in the topic of the sub key question What are the similarities and
differences between our home and a wooden cottage at the Heritage
Village?
The teacher asks the students to sit on the carpet while she asks the
following questions to arouse curiosity:
Who has been to the Heritage Village before?
What might we see at the Heritage Village?
Do you think that people lived in different types of houses than
what we live in today?

2. The teacher introduces the Heritage Village brochure to the students, allowing
them to ask questions and taking turns for each student to explore the pictures
to promote engagement in the topic / place
3. Teacher reinforces school rules and expectations for the excursion today

ensuring the students take their hats and water bottles. (Teacher Aides also
assist the teacher with support on the excursion)

4. Attend the Heritage Village by bus under supervision of the teacher and teacher
aides / parent helpers
5. Students explore the school, wooden cottage from 1900s, experience a ride on
the vintage vehicles, historical fire engines and feed the farm animals
6. The teacher aides support the students as they use the digital camera to take
photos of the cottage, vehicles, school and animals etc so assist with the
reflection of their observations
7. While on excursion the teacher prompts the students with questions such as:
Does this house look like the houses that you all live in?
How is this classroom different to ours?
How are these cars different to the ones that our mums and dads drive
today?

8. The teacher settles the students by transitioning them to sit back at their desks
after the excursion
9. Students discuss and reflect on the excursion and the observations that they
have found from the places at the Heritage Village and view the pictures on the
Interactive Whiteboard that was taken on the digital camera
10. The following questions are asked to the students to conclude the lesson:
What did we see/ observe on our excursion at the Heritage Village today?
Do you think that people?
What is one feature of your home and the wooden cottage at the Heritage
Village the same?
How are they different?
What are some ways that we can help care for these special places?
