Circle Time

Children under the age of 6 do not understand time, they have more of an
understanding of later, before and after. Children at the age of 3 are just starting have
established object permanence and can recall past events, but dont understand sequences like
yesterday, today and tomorrow, etc. You can teach about numeracy, vocabulary, sequencing,
and patterning. You could teach them about colors, numbers, and letters. Other ways you can
present time concepts to young children are picture schedules, classroom journal,
documentation displays, linear representation, games, and project work.
The statement dont confuse academics, with intellectual development, most children
have confidence and when they dont understand then they lose confidence and then they lose
the eagerness to learn. I think the article is getting at the dont confuse academics with
intellectual development because its saying the calendar is more academics with concept of
time and where if you teach sequencing, pattering, numbers, etc. that it is more intellectual
development instead. They should be getting sequencing, pattering, colors, numbers, letters.
