Physical and Chemical Changes

Physical change is a change in a substance

that does not change its identity. It does
not make a new substance.
Chemical change is a change in a substance
that changes its identity. It makes a new
substance that has new and different
properties.
Volume is how much space an object takes up. It is
measured in liters or cubic meters
Mass is how much matter is found in an object. Mass is
measured in grams and kilograms.

Mark each one as measuring volume (V) or mass (M).
Soda

30 cubic meters
of compost
Milk
19,000 kilograms
of compost
1 gallon 305 grams
50 kilograms
V = l x w x h
h
l
w
2 liters
Particle motion describes how atoms and
molecules are constantly moving.

Particles may be moving rapidly and striking
objects around them, or they may only be
vibrating.
Thermal energy is the energy from the
motion of the particles in matter.
The faster the particles move, the warmer
the matter becomes.
The root word therm means heat.
Name three words that begin with the prefix therm.

The objects below have a fast or slow particle motion.
Below each object, write fast (F) or slow (S).
Which object has the
greatest particle motion?
Fouror more
Volume - doesnt change
Shape - doesnt change unless smashed

Particle Motion
Particles are closely locked in position
Vibrate in place

Thermal energy level is low
Draw
Can change into a liquid or a gas if the
temperature increases.
Volume -- doesnt change
Shape -- changes with its container

Particle motion
move freely
are packed closely
stay in contact with each other

Thermal energy level is medium.
Draw

Can change into a gas if the temperature increases.
Can change into a solid of the temperature
decreases.
Volume -- changes with container
Shape -- changes with container

Particle motion
move in all directions
fill in all available space
move freely
collide frequently

Thermal energy level is high.
Draw
Can change into a liquid or a solid if the
temperature decreases.
Plasmas behave a lot like gases.
The atoms have either lost or gained
electrons.

These positive and negative charges
allow it to conduct electricity.

Examples: stars, lightning, northern lights,
neon signs, plasma television and plasma
torches.
Thermal energy level is very high.
Draw
Can change into a gas, liquid, or solid if the
temperature decreases.
