An analysis of language style use in Garfield comic

1.1 Background of study

Language has two manors of exposure that is trough writing form and oral form.
Both of them have function concerning the purpose of its usage namely, the formal and
informal. The formal language is used in formal circumstance, such as thesis writing, and
ceremonial speech; meanwhile the informal is used in informal condition, such as
friendship correspondence or chatting among friend. There are also two kind of language
which concluding in spoken language and written language. The examples of spoken
language are conversation, story, speech, discussion, etc. The examples of written
language are magazine, articles, letters, etc.

One thing that make language different is the style when we are discussing about
the style, it’s mean that wider range of understanding it; style is actually a way of
expression language. Style is the selection of linguistic form of one or group of person,
made within the option presented by the conversation of language and literary form to
convey social an artistic effect (Burgoon, 1978:309).

There are many kinds of literary works such as novel, short story, drama, poem,
comic, and etc. The subject that the author focuses on is from the observation that they
have made from her or his surrounding and author’s experience or the other people
(Koontz, 1981:37), so the stories may have realistic truth, but sometimes they wrote
fictively. Warner states “the style is a way of writing, a manner of expressing One’s
feeling and thought that will be expressed in accordance with his way and manner. It
shows that each person has a different way to express it. Burgoon (1978:309) also states:
“Style refers to the manner in which we express our ideas. Different style can have
different effects on an audience” according to Schuster, “Language style is the particular
way of language spoken to express feeling and thought trough language, or the selection
of linguistic manner of person or group of people made within the option presented by
the conversation of the language and literary form to convey artistic effect (Schuster,
1965:9). According to to Mott, style is classified into several categories, they are
narrative style, that used to narrative a story, humorous style that buses human language
and ask the reader impression, newsy style that used to inform something to the reader,
and last dialog style that used dialogue , and require least two character who are
discussing and communication about something (mott,1968:159-160).

Language style has two manner of condition such as formal and informal
language style. Language style use in formal is like when people write in protocol,
dictionary, law, etc. The other is informal language style which use when people write
newspaper, magazine, comic, novel, etc.

This subject is important for people to make them understand and easy to
classifying the subject that they read and also they can make an analysis on the same
subject of reading.

First, through this study the readers can learn the language style not even from comic but also for
the wider range of reading subject. The second is for other researcher which will need this subject as a
basic on their research and they can use this subject of research as refeeerency on the same case of study.

!.5 Theoretical framework

Paul.G. Warmuth (1964.19-20) sttes ‘ the style of the writter varies with his subject and form
chosen. One might say that style of the writer condicioned by his conception and by his the reader, and
that it varies acording to whether for himself. For his friend , his teacher , for his God for the educated
upper class, or to the educated lower class. So the choen of arranging sentences can be the writer sides ,
for example his knowledge, his education , his ability in languagee and is also influenced by the reader’s
age , sex, education,etc

Acording to Kenney(1996:60), Style is including his way of arranging words into such longer
with as sentence ., it means that style is the chosing the best, and appropiate word to make a good
sentence so that it can rich-attract by his reader.

Style are classified into several catgeoris, they are narrative style, that used to narrate a story,
humorous style that buses human language and ask the reader impression, newsly style that uset to inform
something to the rider, and last dialog style that used dialogue, and require least two charcter who are
discussing and communication about something(Mott,1968:159-160).

1.6 Review of related of literature

a. Language

Acording to trudgill ( 9174 :13 ) that language is a means of communicating use by human to
communicate with other. Chaika (1982 : 1)says language and society are so intertwined that there is not
human so worry that does not deppend on language. Lado (1964: 11) says.”Language is intimatelly tied to
man’s feeling , and activity . it is bound up with nationality, religion, and the feeling of self. It is used for
work, worship, and play be everyone’. So language is some tool that helps human to express his opinion,
feel, and will and also the important means of establishing and maintaining relationship with other Chaika
(1982:1) states ”Language and society are so intertwined that there is not human society that does not
deppend upon language.

B . Language style
Schuster (1965:9) states that “style in language is the manner of expressing what ever is
expressed”. He clarifies further that style in general has been widely used in every aspect of life.
There are styles in dresses style in auto mobile, style of pointers, ect. He also claims that style in
anything involves choices.

The second opinion comes from Gleason (1965:428). He states that “ style is the patterning of
chices made within the opinions presented by the convertions of the language and of the literary
from”. A similar opinion also comes from chaika (1982:29); she argued that “style refers to the
selection of linguistic forms to convey social or artistic evffects

There are four charcteristics of style comes from Crista and Davy (1969:9) they divide the definition
of style into four definition, namelly;

1. Style may refer to some or all of the language habits of one persson as when we talk about of
shakespare’ style or when we discuses questions of disputed authorship.

2. Style may refer to some or all language habits shared by a group of people at one time or over
time, as when we talk about the style of Agustan poets, te style of old english,heroic poetry;
the style which civil service forms are written, or styles of public speaking.

3. Style is given a more resticted meaning when it is used in evaluative sense, referring to the
evectiveness of a mode of expression. Implicate style is devined as saying the righ thing in
the most effectivee way or as good manners.

4. Style is referrred to literary language; Style has long been associated with primary or
exclusivellywith literature,as a characteristic of good, effective or beautiful writing and the
focus of the literary critic’s attention alone.

In those four definitions, we can see that each definition express one idea: it can be conclude that
style according to crystal and Davy is all of the language habits ao one group people in the most effective
way of saying the different from others at one time.

There are seven characteristics of style, namely:

1. Style forms a communication in its own right thet determines how a social interaction will
proceed at al, if it is to continue, style tells how, whether formally or informally.
2. Style tell listener how to take what is being said, ironically, homorously dubiously or some
other way.

3. Style tells how intrupret a message

4. Style forms limited communication system that works along with language itself.

5. Style used all the resources of language. Tone of voice, different ways of pronouncing
sounds, even choice of words and grammar themselves.

6. Style controls the interaction, and

7. Style is so integral with social fungtional that it can not go ahead if one does not speak with
the righ style.

In conclution, Style is the selection of linguistic forms of one person or a group of persons made
within the options presented by the convention of thelanguage and the literary form to convey social or
artistic effects. This the characteristic of style are

a. Selection or choices of linguistic form

b. Appears form one person or a group of persons

D. Style

What is style, according to Cristal and Davy(1969:9)defined style such as bellow:

1. Style may refern to some or all of the language habits of one person as when we talk about of
shakespears’ style or when we discuss question of disputes authorship.

2. Style may refer to some or all of language habirts by a group of people at one time or over
time, as when we talk abut the style of old english, heroich, poetry, written, or public
speaking.

3. Style is given restricted meaning when used in evalute sense, reffering to the effectiveness of
a mode of expression, Implicate style is defined as saying the right thing in the most effective

exclusively with literature, as characteristic of good, effective, beauty writing, and focus on
