How to Help at Home

Knowing basic number facts is an important skill for
students and this skill is identified as such in the
Common Core Standards for Mathematics.
Everyday tasks such as telling time, measuring,
shopping and handling money depend on fluency
with number combinations. It is the basis for estimation
and more complex computation. This fact fluency
supports problem solving and helps students judge the
reasonableness of their results. It frees the mind to
engage in higher order thinking.
Please take some time to help your child increase
his/her mathematical fluency by practicing Rocket
Math nightly or as needed, depending on their
progression through the levels. Check the agenda for
homework regarding current Rocket Math levels.

Problem Solving: Exemplars
To be successful, students must be able to apply skills and concepts to problem-
solving situations and to communicate their thinking to others. In an effort to
help kids achieve their fullest potential and learn critical life skills, Aviano
Elementary School has selected the Exemplars Assessment Rubric for the
purpose of instruction and assessment. This assessment will be used to meet our
schools SMART Goal 1, which states: By 2014, all students at Aviano Elementary
School will demonstrate improvement in math problem solving across the curriculum as
measured by system-wide and school-based assessments.
Exemplars rubrics are based on scientific research and classroom tests before it
was published. Exemplars is used in 50 states and more than 27 schools
worldwide.
Below are suggestions for ways you can help your children become successful
problem solvers and communicators.

Encourage your kids to solve problems.
Students who do demanding work and solve real problems achieve at higher
levels than students who do not.

Help your kids become good self-assessors.
Students who are good self-assessors achieve at higher levels than those that do
not self-assess. Exemplars has rubrics that kids can use to assess their own
performance. Talk about these with your children. Ask them to evaluate their
own papers and then ask them how they can make each one better.

6+1 Writing Traits:
A Quick Overview and Some Definitions
What do you mean by the word trait?
A trait is a quality or characteristic critical to successful
performance. The traits of good ice skating, for instance might
be grace, balance, technical and athletic skill, rhythm, speed,
and so on.

The traits of good writing include:

Ideas Word Choice
A clear point, message, theme or story
line, backed by important, carefully
chosen details and supportive
information.

Language, phrasing, and the knack for
choosing the just right word to get the
message across.

Organization Sentence Fluency
How a piece of writing is structured
and ordered.
The rhythm and sound of the writing
as it is read aloud.

Voice Conventions
The fingerprints of the writer on the
page. The writers own special,
personal style coming through in the
words, combined with concern for the
informational needs and interests of the
audience.

Editorial correctness and attention to
any detail a copy editor would review;
including spelling, grammar and
usage, capitalization, paragraph
indentation, and punctuation.

What is a rubric?
A rubric is a scoring guide. Aviano Elementary school has chosen
to use a point-based rubric for scoring our student writers work.
Rubrics will be sent home and placed in student Writing Journals as
the year progresses.
