b. Use all six points in every lesson plan we write
c. Consider ways to involve & engage students when writing lesson plans
d. Good to use for beginning teacher
1. Focus & Review
a. Link the lesson to prior learning Youll remember from yesterday etc.
b. Constructivist Approach We all learn from what we have before, constructing
knowledge by linking it to something ***
2. Objectives
a. Statements of what students will take from the lesson
i. Formal Objectives- (Comes from state standards) Common Core, Essential
Standards
ii. Student friendly Objective
b. May incorporate higher-order thinking skills in sub-objectives
c. Aligned to states/districts curriculum
d. Include what resources, etc. that you will need to effectively teach your lesson
3. Teacher Input
a. What the teacher does
i. Direct instruction by the teacher; new data provided to the students are
included here
b. Usually involves modeling/demonstrating from the teacher
c. (New) teachers need to plan this part especially carefully since it is a core of the new
learning
i. MORE is MORE *** Rather put too much than to little
d. VERY IMPORTANT Once you teach something one way it is extremely hard to reteach
it or correct students
4. Guided Practice
a. Students practice the skill or concept the teacher has just taught (with assistance)
b. Teacher will monitor and circulate.. checking students understand (CFU) (Is everyone
with me) & answering individual questions from students
5. Independent Practice
a. Doing individual work
b. Students are demonstrating the mastery of the skill they were taught (demonstrating
that they are able to do the work without any assistance from teacher)
c. Frequently homework
d. Test/quiz are also forms of independent practice
i. Have to have a criteria for the independent work you give out
1. Mastery (8-10)
2. Partial Mastery (6-10 )
3. Needs Remediation( 5 or below )
6. Closure
a. The way the lesson is ended, which includes restating or summarizing what was taught
in the lesson ( so who can tell me what we have learned today)
b. Often tied to objection or has final check of understanding (CFU)
c. Determine success of the lesson taught during this part ( overall and each separate part)
d. AS with focus and review, this component is sometimes neglected and the lesson ends
quickly ( often abruptly)
