National Honor Society Bylaws and Charter

The Jordan High NHS chapter is part of the nationwide National Honor Society. The purpose of the club is to promote and honor
outstanding academics, service, leadership, and character. Members will be involved in service projects in school and the
community, and they will attend monthly meetings with a closing social.
I. Membership:

Membership in the National Honor Society will be limited to juniors and seniors. There will be a minimum of seven
student member officers.

II. Selection Procedure:
According to the National Honor Society Handbook,membership should never be considered on the basis of grades
aloneSchools that select members solely on the basis of scholarship are violating the Constitution and placing their
charters in jeopardy. Jordan High Schools selection procedure is as follows:

A. In order to qualify for consideration of membership in NHS, students must meet the academic standard, which is a
cumulative GPA of 3.700 or higher AND successful completion of academically rigorous courses. Academically
rigorous courses at JHS will be determined by each department and the Faculty Council.

B. At the beginning of each school year, the NHS advisor will compile a list of juniors and seniors who meet the above
scholarship requirement. These students will receive and invitation to complete membership information form.
Candidates will be invited to an orientation meeting.

C. Students who think that they qualify academically, but who do not receive an invitation to complete the
information form may contact Ms. Lauritzen or Ms. Stone.

D. Candidates must complete the information form and return it to the advisor by the specified due date. Completion
of the information form, however, does not guarantee selection for membership into the society.

E. The list of students who qualify for consideration of membership in NHS will be given to each faculty member,
counselor, and administrator for character recommendation.

F. Character will be evaluated based upon student attendance records and faculty recommendation/

G. Service and leadership will be evaluated based upon information provided by the candidate.

H. The Faculty Council will evaluate the candidates on the basis of service, leadership, and character and will
determine which candidates will be selected for membership in the society.

I. Candidates who have been selected for membership will be notified in writing, invited to attend the induction
ceremony and given information concerning membership obligations.




III. Member Obligations:

A. Maintain the required 3.700 cumulative GPA.

B. Attend at least 75% of the meetings. Meetings will be held the second Wednesday of every month during the
school year. Students must arrive on time in order to be counted in attendance. Students may attend a make-up
meeting or participate in an extra service project to take the place of a missed meeting. Make-up meetings will be
held every second Thursday, or the day following the regular meeting, at the beginning of both A and B lunches.
Make-up meeting are held in room J222.

C. Pay $10.00 per year membership dues before the induction of new members.

D. Complete the required 4 hours of service per semester. Members must have 4 service hours completed by the end
of the first semester and all 8 hours completed by April 30. The club will sponsor at least one service project per
quarter. Members are required to attend at least 2 of these club service projects during the year. Individual service
projects must be approved by the advisor, and proper driver/driver rider waivers must be signed prior to the
service activity. All service hours must be reported before the deadline of the proper verification form. All service
hours must be done outside of the regular school day.

E. Attend monthly meetings and service projects without reminders. Students should mark their calendars. Not
hearing a school announcement is not a valid excuse to miss a meeting.

F. Maintain high standards of citizenship.

G. Be a member in good standing during the entire senior year in order to graduate with honors.

H. Students may not participate or attend in club activities unless the student has provided written permission from
either a parent or guardian with legal custody or other legal guardian.

IV. Reasons for Dismissal:

A. Inappropriate behavior as determined by the faculty council.
B. Poor citizenship in or out of school.
C. Suspension from school.
D. Violation of school or civil laws.
E. Failure to maintain a 3.700 cumulative GPA
F. Failure to attend at least 75% of the meetings.
G. Failure to participate in the required service projects and hours.
H. Failure to pay dues by the required date each year. Dues must be paid before the induction of new members each
year.

V. Dismissal Procedure:

A. If a member receives a warning for one of the above reasons, that member will be placed on probation and may be
required to appear before the Faculty Council before probation will be removed.

B. A member will receive one written probation notice, and only one invitation to a probation hearing. In the case of
a violation of school or civil laws, dismissal is automatic, as per the National Constitution of NHS.

C. A member may be on probation only once before dismissal.

D. A member will receive a written notification of dismissal.

E. The Faculty Council makes all membership and dismissal decisions.


VI. Selection of Officers:

A. Members who desire to run for office will obtain a petition from the advisors in the spring of the school year.

B. Candidates for office will deliver a campaign speech before the membership of the society.

C. Voting will be done by private ballot.


VII. Duties of Officers:

A. President
1. Conduct meetings.
2. Prepare meeting agendas in consultation with the advisors.
3. Prepare invitations and programs for induction of new members.
4. Organize end-of-year banquet or luncheon to install new officers.
5. Install new officers.
6. Help notify prospective members.
7. Plan and organize at least one club service project.

B. Vice President
1. Assist the president as requested.
2. Prepare announcements.
3. Help notify prospective members.
4. Organize and manage tutoring program and/or recycling.
5. Help with end-of-year activities.
6. Plan and organize at least once club service project.

C. Secretary
1. Keep accurate attendance rolls at meetings and service projects.
2. Write thank you notes.
3. Keep minutes.
4. Send correspondence to members.
5. Help prepare NHS graduation list.
6. Plan and organize at least one club service project.

D. Historian/Treasurer
1. Take pictures at all functions.
2. Prepare a scrapbook or slides to be presented to the society at the end of the school year.
3. Help with end-of-year activities.
4. Plan and organize at least one club service project.


E. Senior Assistant Secretary
1. Assist secretary in maintaining senior service records.
2. Other secretarial duties as needed.

F. Junior Assistant Secretary
1. Assist secretary in maintaining junior service records.
2. Other secretarial duties as needed.

G. Activities Chair (optional, elected as needed.)
1. Help presidency plan and organize club service projects.
2. Contact necessary organizations and set up times for service activities.
3. Compile lists and gather necessary supplies for projects.

VIII. NHS Scholarships

A. The nominating committee for the NHS scholarship shall be the Faculty Council.

B. Scholarship nominations will be made and applications will be given according to the NHS instructions.


IX. Dues and fees.

A. Annual membership dues are $10.00

B. Dues are used to cover the following expenses:

Induction ceremony costs and refreshments
Service project supplies and transportation
Graduation collar maintenance and replacement
Closing social costs

C. Students may be asked to pay a part of the closing social costs, not to exceed $5.00, if there are not enough funds
available from dues.

D. Dues will be handled pursuant to district policy.


X. The club will comply with Utah Code Ann. 53A-3-419, Utah Administrative Code R277-617, all other applicable laws and
regulations, and District and school policies and regulations.
