Classification
The Five Kingdoms
Adaptation
Classification
Definition: Classification is the process of
grouping things according to similarities and
differences (ex. colour, age, size)
Sorting things into groups helps put order into our
lives.
The categories that are made and the groups that
belong in them reflect patterns in the world
around us.
Why is it important that biologists find a way to classify Earths millions of
species?
Classification Systems &
Taxonomy
Definition: classification
systems are organized
structures for arranging and
classifying
The purpose of a classification
system is to allow the accurate
identification of a particular
organism, no matter where it
exists.
Definition: Taxonomy is the science
of classifying organisms
Taxonomy
Question:
Whats the difference between
taxonomy and classification?
Activity
Create a classification system for the following animals:
Eagle, Wolf, Fox, Hyena, Shark, Cheetah, Wolverine, Frog,
Hippo, Tiger, Panda, Cow, Penguin, Giraffe, Koala, Cobra, Trout,
Black Bear, Human
In writing, briefly explain your classification system.
Develop a system to classify common objects into groups or subgroups, and provide a rationale
Identify advantages and disadvantages of having a common classification system for living things, and recognize
that systems change with new discoveries

Kingdoms
The Five Kingdoms
Monera (bacteria)
Protist
Fungi
Plant
Animal
Monera
Simplest form of life
Do not have a nucleus
Absorb food
These are bacteria and cyanobacteria which is also referred to as
blue green algae
Bacteria can be found anywhere, it can grow in hot or cold places
Bacteria can feed on many different things
Protist
Single Celled
All have a nucleus
Absorb, ingest, and/or photosynthesize food
Examples are: paramecium, amoeba
Activity Protist VS. Monera

kingdoms
Protist and
Monera.
Animals
Largest group of living
things on earth
Have many cells
Cannot make their own
food
More than a million
different kinds of species
Able to move
Examples; insects
mammals, amphibians
Vertebrates or
Invertebrates?
Vertebrates
Vertebrates are animals with an
internal skeleton made of bone.
Classified into five groups: fish,
amphibians, reptiles, birds, and
mammals.
2% of the animal species are
vertebrates.
Invertebrates
Invertebrates are animals without a
backbone.
Arthropods, Mollusc
98% of animal species are
invertebrates.
Invertebrates
Sponges
Echinoderms
Cnidarians
Molluscs
Arthropods
Annelids
Sponges
Sponges are a group of invertebrates with about 10,000
species.
Sponges
Adult sponges are non-
moving and live
attached to hard rocky
surfaces, shells, or
submerged objects
Sponges
The larvae are free-swimming.
Sponges
Most sponges live in salt water but a few species live in
freshwater habitats.
