With representatives from academia, civil society, Muslim communities throughout Greece, local authorities and
the Greek and Jordanian government successfully held Tuesday, October 29 , in the hall of the Municipal Council
of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, workshop theme "Strengthening the values of Christians-Islamic
coexistence in Greece through education, religious freedom and human rights" . The initiative for the
meeting belonged to the government of Jordan, with the aim of promoting the Amman Message for Christians-
Islamic coexistence, held under the auspices of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, as part of the celebrations of the
Year of Saints Cyril and Methodius, and funded by the European Union.
The work welcomed the representatives of the co-organizers, Maria Tsakali , Head of the British Council in
Thessaloniki and Honorary Consul of M. town in Britain and Dimitris Kairidis , Associate Professor of
International Relations at Panteion University and Director of the Network of Navarino. The Mayor of Thessaloniki,
Yiannis Boutari , welcomed the attendees, while pointing out the importance of the event for the city. The Spiros
Pegas , Executive Director of Tourism and International Relations of Thessaloniki, noted that the City supports the
efforts of all inter-religious dialogue and inter-religious peaceful coexistence in a city that historically has
confirmed its willingness to allow the different religious communities to coexist peacefully.
In his turn, HE Hayel Daoud , Minister of Awqaf and Islamic issues in Jordan, stressed the need for a global
partnership based on common human values, while Kamel Abu Jaber , Director of the Royal Institute for Inter-

faith Studies (Jordan), reported in an effort to support the Jordanian Muslim world "bleeding" because of
misinterpretation of Islamic law and the lack of leadership guidance, stressing that "when religion becomes
ideology, it becomes dangerous crusade."

functionaries. He said that the Greek Constitution strictly protects freedom of religion and the Greek State
guarantees and protects the rights of all religious minorities. Features said that Greece is the only European
country in which the application of Islamic law Sharia .
The Angelic Ziaka , Assistant Professor of Religion at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, stressed that
religious diversity is a source of conflict for people who restrict the boundaries of religion in the context of their
own faith. The situation in the Middle East and the Mediterranean is dangerous because religion has become a tool
of violence, but the dialogue is considered doubtful when the East is unstable.
On his part, Abdel Rahman Ibdah , the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, said that the Qur'an does not provide any
compulsion in faith, asking ensure individual freedom and makes no religious divides.
In conclusion, the Tsitselikis Constantine , Associate Professor at the University of Macedonia, spoke of the old
and the new Islam in Greece, the different policies applied by the Greek State to Muslim populations depending on
their nationality and the need to link the Islamic law with international.
The Tom Fisher from the University of Coventry, said that the only solution in a world that seems to be
characterized by insecurity is the right education and the promotion of human rights.
After completing the seminar, the Dimitris Kairidis noted emphatically that what is needed today is a substantial
and sincere inter-religious dialogue, with the ultimate aim of deconstruction of stereotypes. As noted, even the
liberal and cosmopolitan elite Western approaches to Islam in a way completely distortionary exacerbating
relations of the Christian West and the Islamic East.

Britain. With offices in Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece connects with educational opportunities and creative
approaches of Great Britain and supporting intercultural relations between the two countries in Europe.
The Navarino Network (NN) -Network Navarino was established in October 2009 and is an initiative of
Entrepreneurs Cultural Society of Northern Greece. The NN is an independent, scientific, non-profit initiative to
promote innovation and openness in public life and the Thessaloniki area.
