IMPACTS TESTS (ASTM E23)

Impact test is performed to study the behavior of materials:
(i) deformation at a relatively low temperature
(ii) a high strain rate (i.e rate of deformation/sudden blow)
(iii) a triaxial stress state
(which may be introduced by the presence of a notch)

Impact test- : - Basic Principles
The notched test specimen is
broken by the impact of a heavy
pendulum or hammer, falling at
a predetermined velocity
through a fixed distance.
The test measures the energy
absorbed by the fractured
specimen.

Advantages
Determine minimum
temperature of use
Finds notch
sensitive materials
Disadvantages
Difficult to apply
quantitatively in design
Addresses
temperature, not stress
or flaw size
